Behind the Scenes of the Source Fashion Shoot

Taking spring style photos when it's 38 degrees outside can be tough.

It was a cold March day in Bend when I went to photograph Alicia Renner for the Source's arts and style issue (which is out on the streets now).

After getting some easy shots of her in her studio where she designs and sews her cloth, Mike, the arts and culture editor, suggested a shot with her bike in Tin Pan Alley. Since we were shooting spring fashion, the dresses were, well, not exactly comfortable for a freezing winter day.

I wanted to shoot as fast as possible to get her back into the warm studio. I had her pose in front of a brick wall with the light coming at her in a 90-degree angle from the left. I did not use any extra lighting to keep a hard contrast. This really brings out the structure of the wall and the bike as well.

In Photoshop I desaturated the colors and applied a high contrast look.
