Urgent Needs for Volunteers at Masters Nationals This Week

With just a matter of hours remaining before the start of the multi-day Masters Road Nationals bike event, organizers are still well short of the roughly 400 volunteers needed to shepherd the event through the five-day campaign that begins Wednesday. Volunteer coordinator Renee Mansour said she is scrambling to find enough bodies to staff key positions including crosswalk safety and course management,  drug testing and even on-course workers to ride alongside the peloton on motorbikes.

As of Tuesday morning, Mansour said she was about 200 volunteers shy of the target.

“There is still a huge need for volunteers,” Mansour said.

While events like the Masters Nationals and the CCC are usually able to get by with fewer than the desired number of workers, it can create safety issues for riders and spectators, she said.

“It does make the staff and USA worry about having the course safe enough for riders. Usually, it works out. I do this for Cascade Cycling Classic also. This is a bit more stressful only because it’s usually not the day before the race and I’m in such bad need,” Mansour said.

She added that volunteer shifts range from to five hours and cover a range of critical jobs. No experience is necessary.

Here is a cut and paste of Mansour’s email callout today with a link to the volunteer registration form.

We are 1 day away & there are 200 open volunteer shifts for the 2012 USA Cycling Masters Road Championships.  Please take a moment to look at the spreadsheets and sign up for at least one shift between Sept 5th and Sept 9th. There will be one time trail, 2 road races, and 2 criteriums.  The directions on how to sign up are on the very bottom of the email.  I am really needing your help.  Please pass this email on to everyone you know!

Here is how it works:

1. Click on this  At the bottom of the spreadsheets there are several tabs that list each day of racing and the date.  Simply click on each tab, look over the individual spreadsheets to see what positions and times work best for you.

3.  Simply fill out the spreadsheet with your name, phone number, email address, then go to the BBQ/t-shirt tab and fill in that sheet as well.  The BBQ has already taken place but I need your t-shirt size.

4.  Please forward this email to your friends and co-workers.

That is it.  As you are filling out this information it comes immediately to me.  No need to save it, just close out of it once you have filled in the blanks.   I am looking forward to working with you as I hope you are with me.  If you have any questions or concerns please call or email me.
