Posted on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM

The Timbers will soon get a sister team.
On Nov. 21, U.S. Soccer announced that Portland would be home to one of the eight new teams that constitute the new women's pro soccer league. The former pro women's league folded in January. Portland Timbers owner and president Merritt Paulso is an investor in the new league and said this on the the Timbers website:
"We are pleased to partner with U.S. Soccer to bring a new women’s professional team to Portland and to do our part to make a top-flight women’s league possible in our country. The Timbers are, and always will be, steadfastly committed to growing the sport of soccer in our region at all levels, and championing a new women’s league and operating a team here in Soccer City, USA, will be an important part of that growth.

“Building on today’s news, soccer fans can look forward to many exciting announcements in the coming weeks and months leading up to the club’s inaugural season, including team name, logo and uniforms; schedule and ticket information; and a host of prominent roster announcements.”

According to SoccerWire.com the other cities to host women's teams are: Seattle, Portland, Ore., Chicago, Kansas City, Rochester, N.Y, Boston, North Jersey and Washington, D.C.

This is good news for women's soccer, which continues to shine in the U.S.
Just this past summer, the U.S. Women's Olympic Team won gold after defeating Japan in the finals. The new Portland women's team could also provide a boost to Oregon and its beleaguered professional men's squad. The Portland Timbers finished the season 8-16 with 10 tie matches and placed eighth out of the nine-team Western Conference league.
