USFS Approves Mountain Bike Park at Timberline

Posted on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Good news for mountain bikers—the U.S. Forest Service recently gave Timberline Ski Area the green light to move forward with its proposed mountain bike park and trail system.
Timberline is going big and has already contracted with Gravity Logic, the B.C.-based consulting firm that designed the now famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

We could be riding new trails by the end of the 2013 season.
  • We could be riding new trails by the end of the 2013 season.

The plan is create a network of trails and features that should cater to riders of all levels (see the trail map below).
Originally proposed in 2010 by RLK & Co., the firm which operates the ski area, the mountain bike park plans were finally approved by the USFS on Nov. 19. The USFS approval authorizes RLK's Special Use Permit to include mountain bike trails, an allowance which Timberline had previously not been afforded. According to the Mt. Hood Forest Service, concerns about the impact of lift-served mountain biking have been addressed in the plans' Environmental Assessment. The notice requires regular restoration efforts, conservation of current flora as well as limited hours of operation.

Given that Timberline is an easy 2.5hr drive, Bendites should be almost as enthused by this news as Portland and Hood River residents.

LOTS of trails.
