Mead for the Masses

This weekend Nectar of the Gods, Bend's first and only meadery, debuted Valhalla Rising, their first mass bottled brew.

On Saturday night, Broken Top Bottle Shop was packed with thirsty patrons ready to try the ancient beverage that predates all other fermented drinks, and is made from fermented honey, yeast and water.

Sweet bottles, too.

The mead was great. It has a unique, pungent flavor and the sweetness from the honey cuts the alcohol, but isn't cloying like some ciders. The stuff is delicious and strong, which makes it dangerous for the casual consumer.

In fact, it is so good that I took a bottle home with me, and when I was jonesing for more last night, I stopped by the Bottle Shop only to find they were sold out already!

Don't fret, you'll be able to get more mead soon. A batch is being bottled as we speak. Stay tuned to the Source to find out where and when the latest batch will be available for purchase. Bottles are $15 bucks, but they're also 13.9% alcohol, worth it.

Nectar of the Gods will also be serving their mead at the Larry and His Flask New Year's show at the Century Center with all of the proceeds going to benefit local non-profit Rise Up International. Drink up!
