Volcano Veggies Plant First Seeds

Sustainable food is so in right now. Enter Volcano Veggies, a local Aquaponic community supported agriculture business that is officially up and running this week. Aquaponics uses fish waste to nourish vertically growing plants in a recirculating environment making it super sustainable and functional in any season.

A press release notified the community that Volcano has planted tomatoes, romaine lettuce and spinach in their newly established tanks in downtown Bend.

If all goes as planned, the tomatoes and romaine will be harvested in about two months and the spinach will be ready by mid-May.

The tilapia that live in the tanks and nourish the plants will take about a year to reach harvest weight. Volcano expects them to be ready to eat in February 2014.

Cheers to local agriculture!
