Finally. Locals Tami Sawyer and her husband Kevin have gotten their just deserts. The two were sentenced in federal court today for defrauding about 30 investors out of over $6 million during Bend's housing boom. She got nine years in prison, he two.
See KTVZ's report on the sentencing here.
The saga of Tami and Kevin has been a wild one, at times involving death, tales of inappropriate sexual behavior, accusations of unethical practices on the part of police and the DA, and just pure meanness. We had our own experience with Tami's sparkling personality during the trial of rapist Thomas Bray.
For months, Tami had been hanging around the Deschutes County Court House dropping by to listen in on hearings and sentencings. Having seen her at several proceedings, I found a seat next to her during the sentencing of Bray and generally tried to be disarming by smiling and kind of bumbling around with my stuff then rolling my eyes at my clumsiness. All my subtle efforts at contact were ignored.
It was weird enough to see her at all these hearings that I decided to ask the obvious.
"Hi Tami, I'm a local journalist. Erin, from the Source. Noticed you hanging around all the courthouse lately, whatcha workin' on?"
She looked at me as though she had smelled something very foul and said as coldly as I'm sure she could muster, "That's none of your business."
Between her sharp looking hot pink fingernails and her Spartan-like bejeweled sandals she was a little fierce—I think her measured response was actually pretty generous all things considered.
In the end, all the reconnaissance couldn't stave off the inevitable—justice.
