The Sweet Sounds of Summer

Posted By on Fri, Jun 21, 2013 at 9:53 AM

The Summer Solstice occurred June 20th at 10:04pm. At that moment the earth’s semi-axis was most inclined to the sun, producing the longest day of the year. Over the centuries, this event has been celebrated in a plethora of ways that include bonfires, music, libations and dance. This weekend, savor the flavor of a midsummer’s day by partaking in as many of these timeless traditions as you can handle, or invent a few new ones of your own.

Tonight Larry and His Flask kick off Rise Up International’s Back Stage Concert Series. Help LAHF celebrate the release of their album Hobo’s Lament at the one and only summer show. Slaughter Daughters and Grit & Grizzle open. Proceeds benefit Rise Up International's local and overseas art workshops.
6pm. Les Schwab Ampitheatre. $7 at

If the light from these long summer days hurts your eyes, step into the darkness that is Metalfest, where you can bang your head to your hearts content to music by local bands Tentareign, StillFear, Shovelbelt, Exfixia, Embrace the Fear and my personal favorite the Beerslayers.
2:30pm. The Domino Room. $5.

Cap off the weekend with two free shows. Indie rockers Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside play the Les Scwab Ampitheatre at 2:30pm (for more info on the band read Ethan Maffey's piece No Bullies Allowed in this week’s issue) or head to the Broken Top Bottle Shop at 7pm for alt-country band Sweet Whiskey Lips.

Check our calendar for a complete list of events happening this weekend.
