Shirley, You Can't Be Serious?

Posted By on Fri, Jul 26, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking. I have turned off the fasten-your-seat-belt sign (‘cause its Friday!). We are currently cruising at an altitude of 3,623 feet. Attendants will begin offering in-flight service shortly. Entertainment and cuisine offerings include fresh honky-tonk from Son Volt and comestibles from the Cascade Culinary Institute paired with a variety of fresh, local and organic free-range music.

Astro Lounge offers outlaw-country punk star Brandon Antakk for your listening pleasure. At Dojo’s, locals Botsford and Swift are throwing themselves a birthday bash and you're invited. The gBots and the Journeymen start the jam at 10pm. The River Pigs play Kelly D’s at 7:30pm, Jackson's Corner has bluegrass band the Prairie Rockets starting at 6pm, Fun Bobby makes it rain at the Northside Bar & Grill at 8:30pm and Willow Grove and Cheyenne West play the Silver Moon Brewery at 9:30pm.

Honky-tonkers Son Volt are at the Tower Theater (read more about them in this weeks Sound section). Caribbean Moon plays the Volcanic Theater Pub at 9:30pm. Local favorites Broken Down Guitars play a free, outdoor show at Elk Lake and the Jazz at Joe’s series continues at Second Street Theater with veterans Rebecca Kilgore and Dave Frishberg. Last Saturday at the Old Mill Iron Works has the Isles, Sara Jackson-Holman and the gBots (boy, they really get around).

There are TWO opportunities to eat well in support of local non-profits tonight. Get to Elevation for the Cascade Culinary Institute’s annual fundraiser Farm to Table for a reception, educational demonstrations and nummy-nums. You can support our beloved Deschutes by attending The Deschutes River Conservancy’s Riverfeast at Mary McCallum Park (adjacent to the Sunriver Marina).

The Summer Sunday Concert series continues at the Les Schwab Ampitheater with perennial favorite Tony Smiley at 2:30pm (and it won’t be too hot). Los Ratones play from 7-9pm at the Broken Top Bottle Shop and Dirk Quinn fuses funk and jazz together seamlessly at the Sound Garden at 6pm. Says the Snake headlines a metal show at Third Street Pub with Exfixia and Lore Uprise opening.

Ladies and gentlemen, as we start our descent into the weekend, please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in a comfortable and reclined position and all baggage is stowed underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins.
