On Snow

As reflected on in my recent Bend Newcomer posting, I'm realigning my norms to west coast ideals.

Where I grew up, snow was a reason for freaking out, for rushing to the grocery store for toilet paper, milk, bread and other apocalypse survival tools. Here, the lack of snow brings people to wailing, crying and hair-pulling (or just generalized pouting).

As we have been enjoying/hating-on the warm, sunny days here in Bend, I've been getting updates from my friends back east. The schools in my parent's town, based below the Mason-Dixon line, have had delays and cancellations for the cold temps and white stuff. My friends in New York City are singing praises of their Ugg Adirondack IIs. A pal in Austin sent me the following picture, with the accompanying caption: "As a child, had I known that somewhere in the world this causes a snow day I think I may have run away to find this magical place..." (He grew up in Boston)

So, yes, Texas has gotten a larger dusting recently than us here in Central Oregon. At least we don't have the Olympics coming to town...
