All that Jazz

A smooth summer night is just a glass of port and a couple mouse clicks away thanks to this week’s jazzy, August mixtape.

Take a relaxing hour and sink into four tracks from each of three grand jazz albums. Just make sure that when the music stops, the exploration keeps going by diving into the complete albums separately. Or as Parks and Rec’s saxophonist Duke Silver says: “Come love with me and maybe we can walk through fire together."

Present Joys, Dave Douglas & Uri Caine: This pairing of two jazz giants, Douglas on trumpet and Caine on piano is one of 2014’s best albums so far regardless of genre. The two instruments take part in a steamy dalliance punctuated by sexy banter and a naked composition that puts their voices front and center.

Happy Girl, Nathan Davis: The saxophone is definitely the star of Nathan Davis’ first album, 1965’s Happy Girl and one recently re-released, perhaps marking a return to a solo career after retiring from running the University of Pittsburgh’s jazz program last year.

Misty, Harold Mabern: Another jazz legend with an album getting the re-issue treatment is bop pianist and band leader Harold Mabern. His solo-piano album Misty has some of the most precious tunes ever composed including covers of popular tracks like “Unforgettable” and “The Way We Were.”
