Tricky Campaign Signs Zing Dudley

Posted By on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 11:03 PM

This one is too funny to pass up.

Carla Axtman, one of Blue Oregon’s contributors, has posted on her Facebook page a photo of a phony lawn sign that she says is appearing around Lake Oswego. The sign has the word DUDLEY above a green silhouette of a state, with “For Governor” printed beneath it.

The zinger: The state pictured is Washington, and at the bottom of the sign are the words “Representation Avoiding Taxation” – a dig at Republican governor candidate Chris Dudley for having lived in Washington for a time to reduce his Oregon income taxes when he played for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Alan Tresidder, a Portland political consultant and lobbyist, says it’s a “dirty trick” and he doesn’t like it: “In a race as close as this one. And, trust me it is close … any dirty trick (funny or not) should not happen.”

My response: It’s “not a ‘dirty trick’ in the category of spreading a lie about a candidate; it's more of a joke.”

What’s your take on this burning issue? Is the sign a low-down dirty trick, or just good clean political fun?

I’m really sorry to break the bad news to them during this season of peace and goodwill, but after this week the right-wingers in Bend and vicinity won’t have The Wandering Eye to kick around anymore. The decision to stop writing this blog was my own, and it was prompted by several factors.

  • DADT, Gay-Bashing and the "Icky-ness" Factor

For the past week or so, “Zeo” of the NW Republican blog has had his jock strap in a knot over the prospect of Congress repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” rule. To hear Zeo tell it, if DADT is repealed and gays are allowed to serve openly in the US military it will mean the end not only of our armed forces but of America, its economic system and civilization in general.
