Another Gathering of the Locals: Homegrown Music

The Homegrown Music Showcase revives some of the Bend Roots spirit with a lineup that will, once again, remind you of the talent we have in Bend.

Yes, it is now almost winter and starting to snow, the mountain is open, there's a frozen turkey in my freezer, but I'm still intermittently suffering from a Bend Roots Revival hangover. It comes and goes, but there are times when I stop and look back on that last week of September and realize that, damn, there's a lot of good music here.

This week there's an indoor local music gathering called the Homegrown Music Showcase to revive some of that Roots spirit with a lineup that will, once again, remind you of the talent we have here in town. The show, which benefits the Ronald McDonald House here in Bend, is largely on the lighter side - sorry metal, punk and hip-hop acts - but is nonetheless diverse.

There's Eric Tollefson, the soulful singer songwriter with rock and roll tendencies who has recently taken his show on the road as of late with a performance at the storied Whiskey A Go Go in LA. Shireen Amini, the trained ethnomusicologist, is playing her own material, taking a break from her many other ventures with other local acts. Also on the bill is Dennis McGregor, the Sisters artist known equally for his vibrant folky rock numbers as well as his paintings, many of which have been used of the Sisters Folk Festival posters.

Making what seems to be a rare appearance is Reed Thomas Lawrence, the bluesy pop-singing dreamboat (yes, the word "dreamboat" has actually been used in our offices to describe RTL) will be playing a set. RTL played Michigan's big Rothbury Festival this summer and also toured nationally, but it's nice to see him playing in town again. And, of course, it wouldn't be a local music gathering without Empty Space Orchestra, who will, by all indications, bring their space rock fury in an attempt to sonically rip out a few Tower seats (not literally).

Homegrown Music Showcase

7pm Friday, November 20. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St., $15, $7.50/Children 12 and under.
