If, like most folks, you love to meet friends at Brother Jon's where you can share a beer, tasty food and some laughs, come January you'll have a new spot to do just that.

Since the summer of 2009, the owners of the popular westside public house have been creating a loyal fan base thanks to the spot's comfy, at-home feel and expansive menu of sandwiches and comfort food favorites. The new downtown location, dubbed The Alehouse, should offer all the fun and good times of the westside location, but in a larger venue on Bond Street that was once home to the Decoy Bar and Grill and, more recently, the Bond Street Grill. And like the original location, there will be plenty of beer on tap. Actually, there will be more beer choices.

Don't, however, come to the new spot looking for Buffalo Mac.

Co-owner John Machell said The Alehouse's food, like Brother Jon's, will be affordable and come in big-ass portions, but will be heavier on the dinner-plate side of things, rather than the sandwich fare found at the Galveston location. Machell hopes to serve steaks and surf-and-turf options, all under the $20 mark.

Most exiting is news of the beer scene at The Alehouse, which is located on the corner of Bond Street and Greenwood Avenue, directly across from the about-to-expand Deschutes Brewery Public House. Machell has nine taps at present with designs to get in four or so more, he said. The goal, though, is to have 15 or 16 taps with at least one nitro and one cask beer on tap.

Machell and crew have been busy cleaning up the downtown spot, making small tweaks, like adding TVs, and expect to host a soft opening by mid-January. Their across-the-street neighbors, Deschutes, will be closed for a remodel and building addition most of January, leaving The Alehouse the only true pub on the north end of Bond St.

For Machell, the Alehouse is an opportunity to keep the good times rolling that he and his team have created with the original Brother Jon's.

"I just hope it's as fun as this place," Machell said referring to Brother Jon's.
