Ms. Dement, from which country did your family immigrate? Did you ever consider that our Native American population and Mexico might have resented mass invasion of their homeland? Do you recall stories of American settlers infecting American Indian settlements with typhoid, smallpox and sexually transmitted diseases? Have you forgotten that California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas once belonged to Mexico? Do you recall any famous American names that originated from foreign lands that have contributed to our country's progress in the world? Washington, Salk, Einstein, Freud, DiMaggio, Kennedy, DeBakey, Frankfurter, Edison, Hayek, Thomas, Cabrini, Pie, Chaplin, Abdul, Berlin, Franklin, King, Kotb, Muir, Lee, Chavez, and Hope are just a fraction of a multitude of names of great contributors to America.
These immigrants (of all races, creeds and colors) have made our country a proud example for the rest of the world. These diverse immigrants brought much more than bedbugs to our country. The small-minded views that you have chosen to spout are shared by too many people in our country and around the world. They should always be challenged.
The Bulletin should be embarrassed for publishing a letter like Ms. Dement's. The Bulletin claims to maintain standards. I remember very well when The Bulletin continued to defend the vile practice of apartheid in South Africa. The standards that The Bulletin claims to uphold are too often positions that I cannot respect.
Unfortunately, The Bulletin refused to publish this letter.
