The iconic NW Galveston Ave. turkey is missing? Shut the cluck up.
No bull. Two weeks ago, Giving, the approximately 25-pound bird that marked the corner of NW Galveston Ave. and NW Federal St., was stolen (thieves allegedly cut the wire pen and abducted city council woman Sally Russell's bird).
Here are the Source's conspiracy theories about what happened to Giving. Whatever the truth is, there was undoubtedly fowl play involved.
Theory # 1: The Bend Follies staged the turkey "kidnapping" in order to generate material for their recent fundraiser for the Tower Theatre. Two days before the fundraiser, the iconic Bend gobbler disappears and the Follies ends up wrought with jokes about it? Sounds like an awfully suspicious turnaround time for joke writing.
Theory # 2: A Source staff member, who has chosen to remain anonymous, attended a barbecue in the Galveston neighborhood less than four days after the turkey's disappearance that boasted a menu of...surprise...freshly smoked turkey. It is entirely possible this staffer thoroughly enjoyed a Giving dinner. He was not a collaborator in the bird's disappearance.
Theory # 3: Some stumbling patron of the Westside Tavern, who spent the entire night guzzling fizzy yellow beers, racked up some nerve and a pair of wire cutters and lifted the turkey to some unknown locale, and is holding it for ransom.
Theory # 4: Over the last few years, Giving has been stealthily growing a pair of opposable thumbs. When the Russells left the wire cutters too close to the pen, he saw his chance, slashed his pen and made a daring escape into the woods off Skyliner Ave.
Regardless of how beloved Giving demised/disappeared, fear not, fowl lovers. If you want to see more urban birds and their couture coops, the 2014 Chicken Coop Tour takes place Sat., May 10. The fundraiser for Together for Children, Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center and Neighbor Impact is an invitation from over a dozen coop owners across Bend for an educational visit via a handy tour book. This year's tour includes 18 coops from modern marvel chicken dream homes to the High Desert Museum's authentic 1904 homestead coop.
