Don Hoxie - Can't Get There From Here

Longtime local rocker and one-time Ranch Records employee Don Hoxie is so clear on his album opener, "Welcome," that he's not impressed by the lack of skill and hard work demonstrated on current records. I agree, music seems too easy to record and sell. Problem is, few artists with strong musical chops make memorable albums. Yes, Joe Satriani might wail on gee-tar... but his albums blow. Just because you can play guitar doesn't necessarily give you the green light to record.

On Can't Get There From Here, Hoxie (also a member of the Substitutes) and band prove more than proficient on their instruments, the sound recording is strong enough to suggest that Hoxie should be considered for all Central Oregon sound board duties, and there are moments of crunchy guitars and well-played call and response. While his vocals suit him well for his dated rock style, I can't sing along with out imagining Hoxie and company romanticizing about 80s hair bands and daydreaming of scoring an opening act on a future Bon Jovi tour. But maybe that's what a longtime rocker like Hoxie is going for.

  • DO NOT SPIT ON MY CAR

We recently visited Bend for the Film Festival and very much enjoyed ourselves, with one small exception. We parked our Ford in the public parking structure, only to find when we returned on Friday night that it had been spat upon, apparently in retribution for our Obama 2012 bumper sticker. I understand that whoever did this was passionate about politics, something I have always shared.

  • THE SOURCE ROCKS, BUT 'ONE DAY AT A TIME' DOESN'T

After living in Bend for a year and a half, I recently stopped through on business. I love the town, the people, and all the outdoor beauty the area offers. One of my favorite things about Bend is without question, The Source. From the first time I read it, I knew it would be a cover-to-cover great time for me to enjoy all the stories, community news, the updates on all the music and arts, presentations, and great things goings on around town.
