Central America is a blind spot in America's consciousness, a region that can hardly be thought to matter much in the face of economic meltdown and two wars in the Middle East. But few regions have as direct an impact on the USA as Central America does.
As trade partners, a labor source and harbinger of coming ideological trends, Central America affects us greatly, and honestly, a coup in Honduras affects us much more directly than a similar action in most European countries. A return to military rule in Central America would create many problems for the US, including floods of refugees, unstable governments and unreliable trade partners.
