Embrace The (Cyclo) Cross

As many of you are already aware, the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will take place in Bend's Old Mill District and on the grounds of Deschutes Brewery from December 10-13. In addition to the races themselves, a weeklong celebration of cycling has been planned, featuring art exhibits, parties, film premiers and more taking place throughout the city. Registration for this event has already broken records for a Cyclocross National Championship and we are expecting upwards of 4,000 total visitors.

This means many things to Bend, including a significant economic stimulus when tourism is typically at its lowest point. It also presents an opportunity to put our best foot forward as a community by welcoming these participants and sharing with them the many attributes that make Central Oregon such an extraordinary place . Along with the many benefits these visitors will bring to our community, we should also be prepared to experience an unusually large number of cyclists riding on the roads in and around town. Each of us can do our part to make their visit a positive one by simply being aware of their presence, giving them a little extra room on the road and thanking them for choosing to spend their discretionary time and money here in Bend. Please join me in welcoming the participants, spectators and support staff of this event to Bend, and in wishing all racers the best of luck during the upcoming competitions.

Sincerely, Doug LaPlaca,
President & CEO Visit Bend
