Keller telling us Why we need to wake up early. Sound Check wasn't quite sure what to expect from Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll and Sipe when the all-star quartet took the stage at the Domino Room last Wednesday (11/12). We'd put a few solo Keller shows under our belt over the years, but had never seen him in full band mode...other than a brief appearance with the String Cheese Incident a few years back. Needless to say...we were more than pleased.

But it didn't take long before Gibb Droll's wailing guitar and Jeff Sipe's tight-as-titanium drum cadences got our booties shaking and heads bobbing, along with the rest of a late-arriving, surprisingly tough-drinking crowd that packed the Domino Room's hazy confines. Keller stayed true to his roots, dishing out some familiar hits like "Kiwi and the Apricot" and "Ninja of Love" while also letting the band get its ya-yas out with some lengthy but never boring jams. We nearly lost our collective mind when Keith Moseley put his deep and countrified voice behind the microphone to supply lead vocals to a cover of The Band's "Ophelia."

The covers continued into the second set when Keller, after telling a confusingly long story about riding in a car with Aretha Franklin and Carole King (we think it was a dream) before launching into a pretty killer version of King's "Natural Woman." No, KWMDS are not natural women by any means, but for about four glorious minutes, they were pretty damn convincing. Next came a lengthy improvisational rap during the snowboarding themed "Freshies" about the importance of getting up early when hitting up the mountain that drew laughs by the avalanche from the crowd.

The band ended with the Keller standard "Best Feeling" and from the dance moves being displayed on the Domino Room, it looked like folks were feeling pretty damn good by that point.
