Sleepless in Seattle

It is Tom Hanks week in Central Oregon (as well it should be). Sleepless in Seattle tells the story of a manipulative child that tricks an emotionally distant father into finding the woman of his (cold, drizzle and distant) dreams. Although still mourning his deceased wife, Hank's precocious half-orphaned child decides to find a new mom with the help of phones and newspapers. Not to be confused with You've Got Mail, which is about finding love with the help of email and lies. The music in Sleepless in Seattle is not quite as Mom's Lawn Party as Forrest Gump, but there are some hits by Harry Nilsson, Carole King, Stevie Wonder and the un-ironically inescapable Randy Newman. Part of the Munch and Movies film series.

Friday, Sept. 5, Dusk. Compass Park.

Forrest Gump

Has there ever been an event in history that could better justify IMAX than seeing a 50-foot tall Tom Hanks handing down homespun life lessons in teeth-shattering, six-channel sound? Forrest Gump stars Mr. Hanks as a simple man with rickety legs that fights in Vietnam, teaches Elvis to dance, learns about AIDS, makes friends with Nixon and discovers Watergate while finding time for love and learning the finer points of being a shrimp connoisseur. Hanks' light touch keeps the film from being a complete Being There rip-off and his scenes with Captain Dan and Jenny still carry an uncommon amount of electricity.

Thursday, Sept. 4, 7 pm & 10:15 pm.
