Give Peace A Chance

The dedication of the Peace Bridge of Bend and celebration of World Peace Day (U.N.-mandated International Day of Peace) will take place in Bend's Pacific

The dedication of the Peace Bridge of Bend and celebration of World Peace Day (U.N.-mandated International Day of Peace) will take place in Bend's Pacific Park on Sunday, September 20th beginning at 2:00 pm. The Portland Avenue Bridge, which is adjacent to Pacific Park, was proclaimed the Peace Bridge of Bend by the Bend City Council on December 17, 2008.

The Peace Bridge of Bend is believed to be the fourth peace bridge in the world, excluding several additional footbridges. The others are the International Peace Bridge between Buffalo, NY and Fort Erie, Ontario, which was created in 1927 to commemorate a century of peace between Canada and the US.; the Kashmiri Peace Bridge sited between the Indian and Pakistani capitals in Kashmir; and the Peace Bridge at Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.

In proclaiming the Peace Bridge of Bend, the city council noted "that this public structure, built to bridge physical divides, may now come to symbolize our collective will to bridge human divides; this for the benefit of our children and their children, that they may grow to understand peaceful resolution of conflict takes patience, and courage, and a desire to foster tolerance and celebrate diversity in our community."

The celebration and dedication is open to the public, and will conclude with the release of some sixty peace doves from the peace bridge. Please join us.

In pursuit of peace,

John Schwechten
