Powder-free Pastimes

Sunriver Nature Center

Mother Nature hasn't exactly been generous with the snow lately, so if you're looking for a winter activity that isn't powder dependent, check out a couple of these local gems.

High Desert Museum

This 135-acre complex, part wildlife center, part cultural museum can make short work of a no-powder day. Open 10 am - 4 pm daily during the winter months, High Desert Museum hosts a diverse array of permanent and temporary exhibits specific to Central Oregon, including an impressive collection of rescued mammals, reptiles, and birds as well as the newly opened Brewing Culture, a craft beer exhibit complete with beer tastings. The museum also puts on a number of special events which run the gamut from live music to lecture series. Check the website for current exhibits and activities. www.highdesertmuseum.org

Sunriver Nature Center

A little further down the road, Sunriver Nature Center is home to a small botanical garden as well as a number of interpretive exhibits highlighting local animals and geology including a meteorite exhibit. The biggest draw here, though, are the live raptors which kids of all ages can check out up close and personal. Open Wednesday through Saturday 10 am – 4 pm, the center sits adjacent to the Oregon Observatory which is open a select number of winter days and evenings. www.sunrivernaturecenter.org
