Ice Skating Season Opens

The cold weather may mean icy roads, but it also means that ice skating rinks have opened around the region. And there are plenty of options whether you plan to Apolo Ohno the skating rink (i.e. speed laps) or Kristi Yamaguchi (i.e. triple Salchow). Nope, not yet the bond-sponsored Bend Park and Rec ice rink off Simpson Avenue—but that project did take a major leap and perfect landing forward this month when the construction contract was awarded to Apollo Construction (no, no relation to Apolo). While we wait for that rink to be ready, there are plenty of other options to keep you twirling around the ice.

Seventh Mountain Resort

Seventh Mountain Resort offers an outdoor ice rink and professional instructors for beginners to advanced figure skaters. Skates are available for rent and, oh right, there are outdoor fire pits. Variable hours, most days, 10 am-10 pm. 18575 SW Century Drive, 541-693-9124. $8 admission, $6 skate rental. And, if the open air canopy of billions of stars isn't enough, Friday night 7-10pm is "Cosmic Skate."

Sunriver Village

The Village at Sunriver Ice Rink Sunriver includes an indoor viewing area, fireplace and solar screening system that offers shelter from inclement weather with an open-air, blue bird day experience. Variable hours. $12. Children under 4, free.

Cascade Indoor Sports

Are you more Xanadu than Hans Christian Andersen pom-pom caps and wool gloves? Stay indoors! The rink at Cascade Indoor Sports offers both traditional skating and rollerblading. 20775 NE High Desert Lane. Admission and skate rental, $8. Kids under 5 years old, free.
