River Solitude

Where does one find solitude on a nearby river? The Deschutes River, of course, is one answer. Tumalo Creek is another. The Bend Park & Recreation District (BPRD) is offering an adult, full-day, 9-mile Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe paddle tour that will traverse flat water and offer ample opportunities to view wildlife. Registration includes lunch and equipment. On May 14, 21 and 28, a Saturday session is offered. A Wednesday or Saturday session is offered June 1 to Aug. 21. The in-district fee is $105 and out-of-district cost is $126. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 541-389-7275 for more information, or register at www.bendparksandrec.org.

Trailpacers

BPRD is also offering more ways to soak in the spring beauty of Central Oregon with a series of 7 to 10-mile hikes May 19 to June 2. These hikes move at a steady pace with moderate elevation gain and offer good exercise. Cost is $69 for in-district residents and $83 for out-of-district residents. Register at www.bendparksandrec.org, or call 541-389-7275 for further information.

Cattle Barons Weekend

Central and Eastern Oregon is cattle country and in Pendleton, May 12 to 14, the city will offer western art shows, a BBQ cook-off competition, and other activities, sponsored by the Pendleton Cattle Barons. The group's mission is to preserve the ranching heritage and 100 percent of all revenue from the Cattle Barons Weekend will fund scholarships for students majoring in agriculture. Further information can be obtained at: www.cattlebarons.net.

Pendleton Underground Tours

If making the trek to Pendleton, consider taking the city's popular underground tour, which explores much of the city's seedy past. Pendleton was a wild cowboy town where barroom brawls, bordellos, and other illegal pursuits were commonplace. It has a rich Chinese history, as well. Pendleton Underground Tours is open year round. Advance reservations are required and payment can be made by Visa or MasterCard. Call 541-276-0730 for reservations, or check: www.pendletonundergroundtours.org.
