It's no secret that there is a Subway opening up downtown next to the D&D. The downtown Subway is owned by Central Oregonian Chris Griffin, who also owns five other Subways in Bend and Redmond.
Out in The Cascade Village Mall retail and restaurant spots are still being filled-the most recent is Mio Sushi. Based out of Portland, this chain of sushi restaurants offers both a traditional and house sushi and hot food menu.
Over on the Westside, Mother's Juice Bar has a new owner. Mike Sackin will be keeping all the favorites but adding a more complete, traditional breakfast menu. Out in Sisters, Jen's Garden is hosting a special wine dinner on Sept 24 in conjunction with Sisters Movie House screening of Bottle Shock. This wine-centric movie starring Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman about the early days of California wine making will be paired with a five-course meal prepared by T.R. and Jen McCrystal and feature some of the wines from the movie.
Bend Wine Cellar Women Tasting Wine events are continuing at Jackalope on September 15 from 4pm to 6pm with Dennis Sienko presenting "Sauvignon Blanc: A World View." Contact Jackalope or Diane at BWC at 388-7564.
And don't miss this month at Thump Coffee as they showcase art created by children living at the Vima Lupwa Home in Luanshya, Zambia. Vima Lupwa, the locally-based nonprofit founded by Bend native and Central Oregon Community College student Malerie Pratt, provides a loving foster home for a handful of the most needy among Zambia's more than one million orphans. The framed art will be available for purchase, and all proceeds support Vima Lupwa Homes and its mission. - Laurie J. Rice
