Newspaper Integrity

WTF is up with the wrap around political ads in our daily papers?

The front page of the newspaper has always been held with a certain amount of reverence within the world of journalism. So it was disappointing to see that our local newspaper saw fit to serve up this past Sunday's paper wrapped in a political ad for the extremely partisan Central Oregon Association of Realtors.
Although identified as a political ad, readers could have easily assumed that the ad was actually an editorial endorsement for what was really COAR's slate of candidates. The Bulletin isn't the only paper mortgaging its integrity for a slice of this year's record campaign spending. The Oregonian peddled its front page to the supporters of a proposed private casino in Wood Village. These are tough times and ad wraps are nothing new in the industry, but selling the space in the middle of an election just feels wrong. Memo to the publishers of both papers: If you're going to sell your soul, let it be for rock and roll - not a realtor.
