Our Picks 10/23 - 10/31

The Trembling Giant

FILM—In some circles the word "hunting" conjures up images of machine gun-toting rednecks with no regard for nature. This beautifully filmed, thoughtful documentary about bow hunting for elk in the American West reminds us that such simplistic, narrow-minded hunting associations are just that. 6:30 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. $6 advance, $8 door.

friday 25

Edgar Allen Poe Night

PERFORMANCE—Local actor Alastair Morley Jaques, now a seasoned Poe necromancer, will resurrect the 19th century poet's dark stories for a night of creepy readings. "Quoth the raven, 'nevermore'" is just the beginning of Jaques' meticulous recreations of the author's inky persona (see Culture, pg. 23). 8 pm. The Belfry, 302 E Main St., Sisters. $10 advance, $12 door.

friday 25

Comedy Benefit

LAUGHS—While there isn't much funny about the need for family structure and mentorship, this evening's comedy show raises money for the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters chapter. Featuring Comedy Central "Comic to Watch" Todd Armstrong and "CMT's Next Big Comic" Adam Norwest, a clever and confident storyteller. 21+. 7 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $50 for one ticket, $80 for two ($10 raffle ticket for year-of-beer!).

friday 25

E-40

HIP-HOP—Just because the Bay Area rapper hasn't made a splash since 2006 when his hit singles "U and Dat" and "Tell Me When to Go" shot to the top of the charts, doesn't me E-40 is washed up. As proof, refer to his 2013 single with Danny Brown. Solid! Locals Day Day, Law-Le$$ and Kole Waterz open. 9 pm. Liquid Lounge, 70 NW Newport Ave. $25 at brownpapertickets.com.

saturday 26

Jazz Night

MUSIC—Perhaps the biggest night of jazz in Central Oregon's history, with competing shows! (see Sound, pg. 25). Jazz at Joe's presents its 44th installment, with "Trumpet Explosion"—uplifting, classic jazz; yup, mostly on trumpets. (7 pm, Greenwood Playhouse, $25.) And, Jazz at the Oxford kicks off its third season with the driving funk-jazz of the Javon Jackson Band, featuring Les McCann's rollicking piano playing. 5 and 8:15 pm, Oxford Hotel, $49.

sat 26-sun 27

Cross Crusade

OUTSIDE—If not Bend's biggest bike event, the two-day, spectator-friendly Halloween cyclocross races are certainly the most fun. Race (categories range from "what's 'cross?" to "pro") or watch (heckling/cheering encouraged) then lose yourself at the Deschutes Warehouse Bash (8 pm-2 am Saturday, Deschutes Warehouse, $10, 21+). Racing starts 8:40 am both days. Old Mill District. Visit crosscrusade.com for more info or to register.

sunday 27

Fall Bellydance Showcase

DANCE—Brightly-colored costumes, jangly accessories and a whole lot of shaking—the High Desert Bellydance Guild is back! Watch in awe as the Central Oregon dancers show off their hip circles, bumps and isolations. 5:30 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. Free.

sunday 27

Black Flowers Black Sun

MUSIC—Celebrate Halloween with the local blues band famous for its gravelly blend of Mississippi death rattles and dance music (see pg. 13 for all our Halloween suggestions). Twangy slide guitar mixes with ragged vocals for an old-timey chemistry that's worth a boot stomp or two. 9:30 pm. M&J Tavern, 102 NW Greenwood Ave. Free.

tuesday 29

Notorious Crime Lecture

PRESENTATION—Wanted posters, bounties, gin-runners, bank robbers. It is all as much part of Central Oregon's history as snowboarding and microbrewing. And, while the stories are compelling enough, the fun and quirky delivery returns them to life; presented by stage actor Alastair Morley Jaques, who attributes his twin influences to Shakespeare and NBC's "Unsolved Mysteries." (See Culture, pg. 23). 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.

wednesday 30

Gremlins

PRE-HALLOWEEN FILM—There are three rules for owning a Mogwai. If you can't name them off the top of your head, it might be time to re-watch the 1984 classic film, Gremlins. What better time than the day before Halloween, with the Source Weekly staff, in a historic church, where tasty 10 Barrel beer will be a-flowing! 8 pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free.
