Our Picks 11/27 - 12/5

friday 29

Civil War

FOOTBALL—Just choosing where to watch the annual rivalry between the Ducks and Beavers may be enough to cause a mini-civil war in your own home. Volcanic (70 SW Century) offers a big screen and a man-cave ambiance, while Brother Jon's (1227 NW Galveston) holds a bit more, er, civility. Or, join the more rowdy sports bar crowd at Sidelines (1020 NW Wall). 4 pm kickoff.

friday 29

Silvero with Hopeless Jack and the Handsome Devil

MUSIC—With power chords that will lift you from your feet and shake you to your very DNA, Silvero transforms Central Oregon's beautiful but epic and no-nonsense tough landscapes into rock anthems. They're joined by the crash-boom-bang of Hopeless Jack and the Handsome Devil, who have been traveling here often enough that we're claiming them as locals. 7 pm, Pakit, 903 SE Armour Rd, $5.

saturday 30

Small Business Saturday

SHOP LOCAL—With a late Thanksgiving this year, the shopping season is compressed! Yikes! Only 25 shopping days left. But that rush-rush shouldn't send you to Target or the mega-chains for your gifts. Keep your presents unique and thoughtful, and keep your money local (lots of special, local deals today). Check out our Feature story, "A Tale of Two Cities," on page 9.

saturday 30

Pray for Snow

BEER PARTY—Thumping beats from Seattle's Ben Union and Boise's Customary, giveaways (that include LOTS of free Mt. Bachelor lift tickets) and of course, gallons upon gallons of delicious 10 Barrel beer (like their annual winter warmer, Pray for Snow). 5-9 pm. 10 Barrel parking lot, 1135 NW Galveston Ave. All ages, free entry.

saturday 30

MUSIC—A delightful blend of folk, rock and spacey noises, Wilderness links vintage guitars, twinkling keys, funky xylophones, layered horns and steady bass and drums with apparent ease. The band's first album, Homeward from the Battle, was released earlier this year, filled with rollicking instrumentals and likeable hooks. 8:30 pm. Silver Moon, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

saturday 30

Christmas Tree Lighting

FESTIVE—Is there a more magical time of the year than when the snow is softly falling on a sparkling spruce in the town square? We think not. Join local choirs singing carols and enjoy the kick-off to the Christmas season as Santa christens the downtown tree. 6 pm. Santa will light the tree at 6:45 pm. Drake Park, corner of Brooks St. and Franklin Ave. Free.

sunday 1

Meissner Opening Day</p>

XC SKI—Wax those skinny skis up—Sunday is the official start of Meissner Nordic's grooming season! If the snow piles up between now and then, donate to your community ski organization and go kick and glide on fresh corduroy (if no snow, plan on a Dec. 14 opening). All day. Virginia Meissner Sno-Park. Free, but please donate at to keep the groomer going.

tuesday 3

A Charlie Brown Christmas with David Benoit

MUSIC—Vince Guaraldi was a composing boss. In tribute, pianist David Benoit and an accompanying quartet will play the music from the original "A Charlie Brown Christmas" special, the one with the heart-melting droopy tree and the discovery of the season's true meaning. It's official, Christmastime is here. 7:30 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $30-$40.

thursday 5

Moondog Matinee

MUSIC—OK, enough Christmas. Let's rock. This five-piece is one of the hardest rocking groups to ever emerge from the gambling pit that is Reno. The band oozes sexy piano riffs, spastic Robert Plant-esque vocals and classic rock appeal. Wilderness opens. 7 pm. Pakit, 903 SE Armour Rd. $5.

thursday 5

The White Buffalo

MUSIC—What's more than six feet tall and covered in hair (aside from sasquatch)? The White Buffalo! The whiskey guzzling, ballad singing Southern Californian who sounds like an Into the Wild Eddie Vedder recently had his songs featured on the "Sons of Anarchy" TV series and just released a raucous new album—Shadows, Greys & Evil Ways. 8-11 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St., Sisters. $15 at
