Our Picks 12/24-1/1 | The Source Weekly - Bend, Oregon

thursday 25

Christmas Releases

MOVIES—Although the terrorists have taken our Seth Rogen away from us (and The Interview release has been canceled for the time-being), Christmas has eclipsed July 4 for the best day of film releases of the year. Check out Into the Woods and The Hobbit, page 23. Various times. A theater near you.

friday 26

Jazz at the Oxford

PIANO—There's not much that feels more in the holiday spirit than listening to twinkling piano in a warmly lit hotel with a tall martini in hand. The second annual Piano Summit will shower Bend with a dusting of culture with keys from Gordon Lee, Tom Grant, Ramsey Embick and Mac Potts with Phil Baker (Pink Martini) & Mel Brown. 8 pm. Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Ave. $42.

saturday 27

Elvis Never Forgotten

ELVIS—We're still not over Elvis. The man changed rock and roll forever with a sway of his hips and a snarl of his lips. Unfortunately, Elvis is dead. But that's not stopping award-winning Elvis impersonator Clint Ingbretson from recreating his greatest songs, taking us all back to a simpler time in entertainment, before twerking. 7 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $22-$54.

saturday 27

Elektrapod

FUNK—"I personally gravitate to funk music because of how it makes people feel," explained Gabe Johnson, bandleader of Elektrapod, in an interview with the Source. "Funk grooves make people want to dance with wild abandon." So there you have it...go dance. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5-$7.

sunday 28

The Rum and The Sea

MUSIC—It has been fun to watch local band The Rum and The Sea evolve over the past few years. But, through all of their growth and musical maturing, they have maintained what makes them a great band: Fun-spirited storytelling that would fit as well on the deck of a pirate ship as around a cowboy campfire. 7 pm. McMenamins Old St Francis, 700 NW Bond. Free.

sunday 28

Third Seven and If Bears Were Bees

MUSIC—The solo project of Billy Michelson, Third Seven draws heavily on haunting and pliant cello tones, pulled both from the stringed instrument and Michelson's own voice, which takes on a syrupy quality. Using a loop pedal, Michelson draws on his versatile musical skills to conjure a richly accompanied one-man band. 7 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

monday 29

Cow Patty Crit

FAT BIKES—Fat bikes sacrifice speed for an ability to slosh through mud and sluice through snow. And increasingly the sport is moving out of a purely recreational activity—a way to keep biking year-round—and becoming competitive. The Cow Patty Crit is a new race, with a round robin elimination format. 2 pm. Black Butte Ranch. $10 entry fee.

tuesday 30

Tubaluba

BRASS—Any brass band worth its salt has the power to raise you to your feet and send you marching, clapping and swaying down the street. Seattle-based Tubaluba is no exception. Its talented horn players have played with Mackelmore and shared the stage with bigger names like Rebirth Brass Band. And, they get plenty of solo time. 7 pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St. Free.

wednesday 31

Masquerade Party with the Sugar Beets

PARTY—For the past two decades, the Sugar Beets have blended bluegrass, Celtic, pop and more to create smooth and imminently listenable melodies that beg to be blared out the windows of your Volvo wagon. Also suitable for barefoot dancing in living rooms adorned with tapestries, Celtic knot art and the collected works of Eckhart Tolle—and ringing in the New Year in Sisters. 8 pm. The Belfry, 320 E. Main St., $20.

wednesday 31

Pretty Faces

FILM EVENT—With beautiful panoramas, point-of-view footage of breathtaking jumps and a catchy soundtrack, Pretty Faces is a recent release that has quickly taken its place among top-notch ski movies. But the one important difference? It's all women skiers, a rarity in adventure films. Back by popular demand. Showings at 6 pm (all-ages) & 9 pm (21-plus). Old Stone, 157 NW Franklin. $10.
