Our Picks 4/23-5/1

thursday 24

Jeff Crosby and the Refugees

ROCK—This L.A. via Idaho band has the small town to big city storyline locked down. With folk-rock songs about transitional points in life, leaving home, the open road and the shock of settling in a metropolis, anyone (or everyone) who has ever experienced a massive change in life can easily relate. Local singer-songwriter Anthony Tripp opens. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

friday 25

Bend Follies

HEE-LARITY—This is not meant to be sophisticated humor, so leave your monocle at home. Bend Follies is a favorite, side-splitting humor variety show, as good as an ole tyme Vaudeville show, with groaningly bad (or wonderful) jokes and colorful slapstick. Doors and mingling at 6:30 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $20-$50.

friday 25

Harry Potter Trivia Night

TRIVIA—Which spell repels dementors? How many balls are there in a game of quidditch? What is Hagrid's first name? Quiz yourself on the boy who lived and J.K. Rowling's fantastical world of Hogwarts and beyond. Nerds welcome, but muggles need not attend. Three rounds of 15 questions, teams of up to four. 6:30 pm. Barnes and Noble, 2690 Hwy 20. Free.

friday 25

4 Peaks Preparty

PREPARTY—It must be a pretty great party, if the preparty is this good: In anticipation of one of the season's first outdoor festivals, June's 4 Peaks Festival, Friday will be a small sampling of the event's thigh-slapping bluegrass with Ashland's Eight Dollar Mountain. 8 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood. Free.

saturday 26

Pennywise

PUNK—Despite hitting its peak popularity during the mid-'90s, Pennywise has soldiered forth. Merging hardcore's pacings with the more slap-happy inclinations of the genre, the band has turned skate culture and its music into a sustainable and known quantity. Teenage Bottlerocket opens. 8 pm. Midtown Ballroom. 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $20-$23.

saturday 26

TEDxBEND

INSPIRATION—With a bigger lineup and bigger venue, the ideas should correspondingly be bigger as well. And with a clever mix of CEOs (Bob Hurley from a skate and surf company), an astronaut (see interview on page 25), and beekeepers, TEDxBend is presenting ideas about professional life and professional play. 1-6 pm. Bend High School, 230 NE 6th St. Sold out. After-party at 6 pm, Pakit, 903 SE Armour Rd.

sunday 27

Foodie Crawl

EATS—At the third annual food-based fundraiser for the Bend Community Center's Feed the Hungry program, attendees will munch on small plates with beverage pairings across downtown. The offerings are cooked up by some of Bend's favorite chefs and restaurants, including 10 Below, Drake, Hola!, Jackalope Grill, Zydeco and Spork. A desert and afterparty round out the filling evening. Music from Bill Kaele and Downhill Ryder. 3 pm. Tickets available at bendscommunitycenter.org. $20-65.

monday 28

Dr. Monica Wehby

POLITICS—The Redmond Patriots are hosting candidate for U.S. Senate Dr. Monica Wehby's appearance during her sojourn to Central Oregon. Facing local Rep. Jason Conger in the Republican primary, the pediatric neurosurgeon already differentiated herself from her opponent by saying abortion is a woman's choice. 6:30 pm. Highland Baptist Church, 3100 SW Highland Ave., Redmond. Free.

monday 28

Muzez Tour (MCs Sassy, Jaeda, Kelley Mak, Valentina)

HIP-HOP—There aren't too many widely appreciated female MCs in the game. Luckily, Bend's getting an influx of such talent as the Muzez Tour makes its stop in town. Each performer's recording is backed by sleek-sounding, contemporary productions. But hearing Valentina go in on "Txt," belief in hip-hop's avant potentials should be re-enforced. 10 pm. Dojo, 852 NW Brooks St. $5

tuesday 29

Peter Rowan

AMERICANA—Grammy winner and godfather of newgrass, Peter Rowan is famous for pioneering a second-wave bluegrass movement, one that took the genre from porch-picking Appalachia into new, jammy territory. Merging '60s rock culture with traditional hill-folk musicality, Rowan is now the stuff of legend. 7 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St. $25-30.
