Point Break

SWAYZE SUMMER—Kathryn Bigelow's action/surf/adventure film Point Break is, obviously, one of the greatest movies of all time. Catch the 1991 classic, starring Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey and, of course, Patrick Swayze, with his golden locks and glistening pectorals, FOR FREE, while sipping a cold one. "You know I can't handle a cage, man!" See pg. 5 for more Swayze Summer dates. 8 pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free film!

wednesday 17

Fermentation Presentation

METABOLIC PROCESS—Where would the world be without fermentation? Beer-less, for one. Also, we'd be without sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt and kombucha. Additionally, recent studies claim fermented foods are especially nutritious. Learn more from noted author Sandor Katz ("The Art of Fermentation," "Wild Fermentation"). 6pm. Central Oregon Locavore, 1216 NE 1st St. $20.

friday 19 – sunday 21

Balloons Over Bend

FAMILY FUN—Just as it sounds...But! There's more! Watch the balloons launch from Riverbend Park (free! daily at 6 am) and, come dusk, illuminate the night sky like fireflies. A festival with fun and games for the kiddos kicks off at 10 am Saturday and Sunday. And, new for 2013 is Saturday's Urban Scramble, a zany footrace that snakes all over town. Starts 6 am Friday, Riverbend Park, 799 SW Columbia St.

sunday 21

MUSIC—With raspy vocals, screamin' fast banjo, a box full of harmonicas riding over crackling washboard and thumping washtub bass, Portland's Sassparilla blends Southern rock, bluegrass and blues. The punky backporch jug band will have the crowd on its feet dancing and sweating in the sweet afternoon sunshine. 2:30 pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. Free.

saturday 20

Twilight Criterium

BIKE RACE—The 34th annual Cascade Cycling Classic is in full swing. Head downtown Saturday night and watch the pro women (5:45 pm) and pro men (7 pm) scream around the four-corner course at ridiculously fast speeds. Crashes, sprints, breakaways and glory—it's all here. Get down early to claim a good spot. Starts 5:45 pm. Downtown on Bond and Wall streets. Free.

monday 22

Springsteen & I

FILM—Bruce Springsteen loves America, and America loves him right back. Proving that it's not just Jersey natives who worship The Boss, this film is a tribute from fans worldwide—a love letter explaining how Springsteen's music became the soundtrack to so many lives. Listen to "Glory Days" and you'll totally get it, see pg. 43 for more. Go, America! Old Mill Stadium 16, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr. 7:30 pm. $15.

monday 22

Johnny Winter

BLUES—Johnny Winter was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame a decade ago, and he is still touring! Ranked in the Rolling Stones' top 100 guitarists (of all time, thank you very much), Winter has been around since Jimi Hendrix (and even dated Janis Joplin) but hasn't slowed down one lick. 7:30 pm, Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $29.50-$44.50.

tuesday 23

$2 Tuesday

BASEBALL—The Elks are at the top of their game—and the top of their league! What more reason do you need to cheer on the home team? Oh, you want it for cheap! Well, tonight there is that as well. $2 Tuesday. 6:35 pm Vince Genna Stadium, 401 SE Roosevelt St. $2.

wednesday 24

Worthy Tasting

BEER—Along the downtown promenade, Wednesday evenings in the summer are bustling with blueberries, stacks of carrots, broccoli and every treat our local farmers can imagine. And now Worthy Brewery brings along free samples—YES, FREE, you dirty hippie—to wash down those veggies and fruits. When will they start giving those away for free! Am I right? 3-7 pm, Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall

wednesday 24

Noah Stroup

MUSIC—In contemporary music, everybody sounds like somebody else. Lucky for Noah Stroup he sounds eerily akin to the screaming falsetto of rock god and Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant. So much so, in fact, that he's been the vocalist for Led Zeppelin tribute band Stairway Denied for the past eight years. 21+. 10 pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St. Free.
