Our Picks 8/28 - 9/5

wednesday 28

Pickin' and Paddlin'

MUSIC & BEER—Waterlogged river rats are in for a treat this month. Portland-based bluegrass pickers Wayward Vessel are taking the stage, and holy shit can they sing! Fiddler Julie Schmidt's beautiful, soaring vocals on the Dylan classic "Boots of Spanish Leather" will have kayakers shedding salty tears into their frothy pints. 4-10 pm. Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe, 805 SW Industrial Way, Suite 6. Free.

wednesday 28

Red Hands Black Feet

and Iconoplasty

MUSIC—Journalist and author Josh Gross (see: "The Hack") and his spacey improvisational guitar-looping band, Iconoplasty, are teaming up with Red Hands Black Feet, Boise's ambient post-rock punks, on a rambunctious musical tour that almost never was. Consider yourselves lucky. Third Street Pub, 314 SE Third St. 9 pm.

friday 30

Crystal Fairy

FILM—At only 25, Michael Cera, the Arrested Development geek already has scored as many comedies as fellow Canadian Rick Moranis. In Crystal Fairy, he adorably plays to a T a hard-edged ugly American tourist on a European tour. Friday and Saturday 8:30 pm, Sunday 7:30 pm. Tin Pan Theater, 869 NW Tin Pan Alley. $6.

friday 30

Life of Pi

OUTDOOR MOVIE—Ang Lee's clever and spectacularly beautiful adaptation of Life of Pi, the magical book about a boy on a lifeboat with a tiger, should just about splash off the screen at the penultimate Munch and Movie night. 6 pm, NorthWest Crossing's Compass Park. Free.

friday 30-sat 31

Little Woody

BEER—The fifth annual Barrel Aged Brew and Whiskey Fest might be our favorite (fermented) event of the year. If you're unfamiliar with the event, expect one-off beers from some of the best brewers in the business, and carefully curated small-batch bourbons and ryes. New this year are the offerings from out-of-town breweries Stone, New Belgium and Lagunitas. Friday 5-10 pm; Saturday 12-10 pm. Des Chutes Historical Museum. $15.

saturday 31

Ducks & Beavs

Home Openers

COLLEGE FOOTBALL—Last year, Nicholls State (yeah, where? A: Louisiana) had their jock straps handed to them 77-3 by Oregon State. This year they return to Oregon (against the Ducks this time) for a season opener. Don't expect an upset. 1 pm Ducks Game; 6 pm Beavers. Volcanic Theater Pub, 70 SW Century Drive. Free.

saturday 31-sun 1

Sunriver Sunset Wine Fest

VINO—Hopped out? Head to the Wine Festival at Fort Rock Park (a free shuttle leaves from Sunriver's Three Rivers Elementary). Picture this: As the sun sets on the Central Oregon desert you're left choosing between pinot or Riesling while another local acoustic act takes the stage. Sounds like relaxation station to us. 12-7pm; 11 am-6 pm. Meet at Three Rivers Elementary, 56900 Enterprise Dr. $10.

saturday 31

MGMT

MUSIC—MGMT had more smashing electronic-spaz hits ("Electric Feel," "Kids" and "Time to Pretend") on 2007's Oracular Spectacular than most electronic-spaz bands have in their entire careers. Dance, be merry, and sing along to the three songs you know. Kuroma opens with the same upbeat, overly catchy and nearly seizure-inducing pop songs that made MGMT famous. 6:30 pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. $35-$40.

saturday 31

PH3R

BEATS—Not done dancing after MGMT? Cruise to Astro for Portland electronica artist PH3R, a producer who mixes echo-filled glitch with syrupy-chopped beats and screws mixes and mashups well enough to have any and all speaker-freakers shaking their bums. 10 pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St.

wednesday 4

Ian McFeron

AMERICANA—It is tough to assign a hometown to Ian McFeron, as he tours some 200-plus days. But it's easier to pin down his musical influences (Bob Dylan, John Lennon and a cart full of Americana crooners). And there's a reason Seattle-grown McFeron's music sounds like that of Ryan Adams and John Hiatt: He shares bandmates with those artists. 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond. Free.
