Our Picks 9/11-9/18

thursday 11

LoCash Cowboys

COUNTRY—Dust off your boots and shine up that fancy buckle, country duo LoCash Cowboys are coming to town en route to the Pendleton Roundup. Though these boys have yet to release an album (too busy carving donuts into a muddy field, maybe?), they've had some Billboard charting singles and co-written tracks for Keith Urban and Tim McGraw.9 pm. Maverick's Country Bar and Grill, 20565 Brinson Blvd. $15.

friday 12

Munch and Movies

FILM—Enjoy the dwindling summer nights by watching a flick outdoors under the fading sunset skies of Central Oregon. This week: The Lego Movie (PG), a surprisingly adult and hilarious film about an ordinary Lego construction worker (because how else could a Lego-man be employed?) who must stop an evil Lego-tyrant while avoiding stepping on his own sharp building materials. 7 pm. Compass Park, Northwest Crossing. Free.

friday 12

Les Misérables

THEATER—Quite possibly the biggest theatre production Central Oregon will see this year, Les Misérables rehearsals started way back in January to bring the loudest, longest and most depressing musical about 18th century French social hierarchy to the stage at the Tower Theatre. 7:30 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $30-$45.

friday 12

Andre Nickatina

MUSIC—What sets Andre Nickatina apart is that, despite drawing from rap clichés (with predictable songs like "Bullet, Blunts in Ah Big Bankroll"), he, now and again, cleverly twists and contorts those familiarities into masterpiece songs like "Conversations With A Devil," which relentlessly changes up the beat so that his uniqueness and voice is heard loud and clear. 8 pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $24.

saturday 13

Festival of Cultures

CELEBRATION—Oh, you betcha that Redmond is a melting pot. The annual Festival of Culture is a day-long celebration of that ethnic diversity, with everything from Russian ballet and Salsa-Bachata dancing to Flamenco guitar and the Crook County jazz choir. 10 am-evening. Centennial Park, SW 7th St., Redmond. Free.

saturday 13

Out of the Darkness

COMMUNITY—With the recent high-profile suicide death of actor Robin Williams and the still-fresh memory of the loss of a Bend High School student last February, the annual community walk and fundraiser for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention feels timely. The event includes a memorial garden displaying photos of loved ones. 8:30 am. Pilot Butte State Park. No cost, but raising funds is sort of the point.

sunday 14

Oregon Book Award Tour

WORDS—Screw rock stars, we word nerds love a good lit tour. Oregon Book Award winners Kari Luna, author of "The Theory of Everything" and a self-identified whimsicologist (not to be confused with Cari Luna, Oregon author of "The Revolution of Every Day"), and essayist Elena Passarello, whose "Let Me Clear My Throat" deconstructs the deeper meaning of the sounds we make, read from their books. 2-3 pm. Downtown Bend Library, 601 NW Wall St. Free.

monday 15

Larry and His Flask

MUSIC—Fresh off their European tour, hometown grass-rockers Larry and his Flask are a cymbal crash, a power chord and a shotgunned beer away from superstardom. With a style mixing traditional roots and punk rock that is all its own, the Flask plays music for lamenting loss, drinking too hard and jumping around for the duration of both. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $10.

tuesday 16

Fall Repair Cafe

DIY—Everyone has that busted bike, torn sweater or sparky toaster lying around in the "But I could totally fix it!" pile. Well, now you actually can. Rethink Waste Project is hosting a repair cafe where crafty DIYers share their smarts—and their spare parts—to move you from hoarder to recycler. 5:30-7:30 pm. The Gear Fix, 345 SW Century Dr. Free, but cash to reimburse is encouraged.

thursday 18

Tony Furtado & Stephanie Schneiderman

MUSIC—The beauty of true vocal harmonizing is that each voice complements and reinforces the other, as does Stephanie Schneiderman's breathy voice stealthily fill in the twang of Tony Furtado's riffs and vocals, like an evening fog settling into the valley. 7 pm. Belfry, 302 E. Main St., Sisters. $12.
