Our Picks for 04/25-05/03

This week's must-see events.

Rabbit Hole

Cascades Theatrical Company presents the show, which you should read about in this week’s Culture section. $12-$20. Wednesdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm, through May 6. Cascades Theatrical Company, 148 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Question of
Afghanistan: Sima
Simar

thursday 26

Human rights activist and Nobel Prize nominee, Simar was the first Hazara woman to graduate with a degree in medicine from Kabul University. She spent more than a decade abroad as a political refugee before returning to serve as a member of the Afghan Transitional Government under Hamid Karzai. An advocate for women’s rights, Simar resigned her post after her criticism of sharia law put her life in danger. $15 and $25. 7pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

California and Montreal Guitar Trios

friday 27

Six-stringed virtuosity and pop music playfulness are what’s in store during this flamenco meets fusion fest. See On Stage for more. $25 and $30. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Mann with MOsley WOtta

friday 27

The West L.A. rapper has a song with Snoop Dogg, which basically makes Mann the man, despite his 5’4’’ stature. Check out the video for his single “The Mack,” and see Snoop in his element—at a pool, surrounded by ladies and making easy money backing an up-and-coming hip-hop artist. $18 at bendticket.com. 7:30pm. The Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Urban Cowboy Party

friday 27

We’re throwing a shindig and all y’all are invited.  We’re mixing it up and getting all honky-tonk on you. There’s gonna be a mechanical bull riding competition, live music by Harley Bourbon and Boxcar Stringband, and prizes for the best cowboy get-up. So put on your sharpest duds and come join us. Entry is free, but if you want to ride the bull, you have to sign up at bendticket.com (also free, but only 20 spots available). Free! 8pm. Maverick's  Bar and Grill, 20565 Brinson Blvd.

Ted x Bend

saturday 28

Sadly, if you wanted to sit in the Summit High auditorium and soak up all the smart and inspiring TEDx talk, it’s too late to buy a ticket. BUT! There are still tickets available for the live-streaming room, also at Summit High. Speakers include civil rights leader Myrlie Evers-Williams, Zambia orphanage founder Malerie Pratt among a bunch of other visionaries. Afterward, move on to the after party at the Century Center, which runs from 6-9pm. This is a seriously rad event. Learn more at TEDxbend.com. 1pm. Summit High School Auditorium, 2855 NW Clearwater Dr.

The Deadly Gallows

saturday 28

This is a ‘pick’ because they’re pirates. And we like pirates. The Reno string band separates themselves from the pack by incorporating howls, yells, shouts and other loud calls of wild into their rowdy gypsy rock. Fast-paced and more fun than beers with Black Beard, a Deadly Gallows show is a rootin’ tootin’ good time. Local band Kentucky’s Longrifles opens the show. $5. 8pm. 507 NW Colorado Ave.

Jeff Merkley Town Hall

sunday 29

Oregon’s junior senator continues his barnstorming tour of the state with stops in Bend, Prineville and Madras this weekend to hear constituent concerns. A former state senator, Merkley has showed a penchant for speaking truth to power in the halls of D.C. voting against the GOP’s phony debt ceiling compromise and pushing hard for real relief for debt-ridden homeowners who were washed away by the foreclosure tide. Free. 4:30pm Bend Senior Center, 1600 SE Reed Mkt. Rd.

Keola Beamer and Raiatea Helm

sunday 29

Beamer is a slack key guitar master with a sweet name whose playing appeared on the Descendants soundtrack. He teams up with fellow Hawaiian and Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm.  Together the pair’s innovative renditions of ancient Hawaiian tunes will leave you so at ease you’ll feel like you’re swinging in a hammock on Hanalei Bay. Aloha. $25. 7pm. The Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St

Polecat

wednesday 2

Everything from bluegrass to country to Celtic to rock, this band is super versatile. With a fiddle and a bass and a great live show, this is an excellent opportunity to make it out to McMenamins for its free concert series. 7pm. Father Luke’s Room, McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Eric Tollefson

thursday 3

The local singer-songwriter just released, The Polar Ends, and will play the new pop record in its entirety, complete with horns and backing vocals. He’ll be playing with Sara Jackson-Holman, Kat Hilst and a number of other special guests. To read more about his new record all you have to do is turn the page. You can do it! Free, all ages. 7pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St.
