Our Picks for 10/21-10/27

Top happenings around town chosen by the Source staff.

SPL with Harry Champagne and DJ Swett

friday 21

Who is Central Oregon's most world-renown musician? The Dirtball or perhaps the men of Larry and His Flask? Close, but we're going to say that Bend's own SPL (real name: Sam Pool) is likely the most known entity out there, thanks to the DJ's contributions to the dub step and dub hop genres. In fact, he recently got a little shout out in Spin for his efforts! Now, he's coming to town, along with Harry Champagne and DJ Swett to remind us how to party. 21 and over. $5 at brownpapertickets.com/event or $7 at the door. 10pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St.

Violin vs. Vinyl with Jay Tablet

friday 21

This crafty Canadian outfit combines the violin work of master player Kytami and the turntable techniques of The Phonograff with the hip-hop verses of Mista Chatman to create one of the most unique party acts you're likely to see. This show also features local MC and producer Jay Tablet, who will be hosting this sure-to-be-raging show. 18 and over. 9pm. Innovation Theatre Works, 1155 SW Division St.

Love of Beer

friday 21

For a long while, the brewing industry was dominated by men. But these days, women like Bend's own Tonya Cornett have shown that gals know what they're doing when it comes to making a solid beer. Love of Beer showcases the women of the Northwest craft-brewing scene, including plenty of coverage of Cornett's dominance on the national and international competitive beer circuit. Two days, two showings per day: Fri. and Sat. 6pm and 8pm. goodlifebrewing.com/theloveofbeer. GoodLife Brewing, 70 SW Century Dr.

Central Oregon's Last
Comic Standing

friday 21

With last year's event filling the seats of the Old Stone each for each night of the contest, we, along with Combined Communications, are bringing back Last Comic Standing. The contest brings to the stage our funniest and bravest (you try getting up in front of a few hundred) residents to compete for $5,000 in cash and prizes. It's all up to the audience as to who will advance from this opening round to the next level, so if you have friends competing, be there to vote them on. Also, the event is hosted by the Source's own jerk-who-thinks-he's-super-funny, Mike Bookey. $5 at bendticket.com or door. Order of performances at clashofthecomics.com. 8pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave.

Tower of Power

friday 21

We have an interview in the Sound section with Tower of Power saxophonist and founder, Emilio Castillo, in advance of this show. Hopefully, you nailed down your tickets already because the show is totally and completely sold out. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Yellowman

saturday 22

We've got some serious reggae on the docket for this week, and the first show on this week's Picks slate comes from Yellowman, the albino Jamaican legend who first came to prominence almost 30 years ago with songs like "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng." He's no stranger to Bend and those who've caught his previous appearances can speak to the quality of this show. $18 at bendticket.com. All ages. Doors at 8pm. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Green with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad

monday 24

After you get a dose of Yellowman, feel free to return to the Domino Room on Monday night for this double bill of bouncy sounds. This time around, though, the acts are from the next crop of reggae heads, including Hawaiian rockers The Green and the spaced-out sounds of Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, a Rochester, New York, progressive dub act that's known to get a room moving. $12 at Bendticket.com, $15 day of show. All ages. 7pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Felice Brothers

monday 24

This band's Celebration, Florida has been playing on a loop at the Source offices for the past couple of weeks and we're stoked that the New York-based Americana-turns-electro act is finally coming to town. Check out the Sound section for a profile of the act. Gil Landry of Old Crow Medicine Show opens. $15 on bendticket.com. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Miles Davis Experience

thursday 27

If you haven't noticed, jazz music is making some inroads in our cultural landscape as of late. There's the ongoing Jazz at Joe's series at the Old Stone and soon the Jazz at the Oxford series is coming back for another season. To get you in the mood for this live jazz, take a look at this presentation that focuses on one of jazz's greatest performers, Miles Davis. The production includes film, photos, beat poetry and live performances by trumpet phenomenon Ambrose Akinmusire. $30 at towertheatre.org. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.
