Our Picks for 10/7 - 10/15: BendFilm Festival, Pumpkin Fest, The Janks, Pac Man Party

BendFilm Festival

thursday 8 - sunday 11

The region's very own film festival is back and kicking this year with four full days of screenings split throughout town as well as out at the Sisters Movie House (for the first time ever). Check out BendFilm.org where you can download a complete list of films and their screening times, as well as the schedule for the parties. If you need help picking what you want to see, turn to the Culture page for Anne Picks' picks... that was a pun!

Ruins of Ooah, Basin and Range

thursday 8

If you missed Ruins of Ooah's booty rumbling set at Bend Roots a couple weeks back, don't make another stupid mistake (yes, missing that Roots set was indeed stupid) and get your didjeridu-loving self to the Summit where the band is playing with Eugene jazzy funkateers Basin and Range. Check out the Sound section for a profile of Ruins of Ooah., 9pm. $5. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.

Under Pressure

thursday 8

Apparently, you can make art with a steamroller, which is exactly how the pieces seen at this show were made. Check out this reception marking the end of the show. 5pm-8:30pm Atelier 6000, 389 SW Scalehouse Ct, Ste 120.

Tom Catmull and the Clerics

friday 9

This Missoula outfit's Americana glistens with pop at times and is dusted with country rock hooks at other moments. It's not all that gritty, but it's solid, good ol' fashioned roots rock. $5. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Pumpkin Fest

saturday 10

Forget the fact that we had enough snow on the ground last weekend to bust out the big ass boots with the furry lining (we don't say brand names), this weekend has returned to full fall form just in time for us to celebrate the great pumpkin. This fest features a strong showing from our local acoustic community including Deb Yager and Bo Reynolds, Scottish Fiddlers, Kim Kelley, The Quons and more. 10am-4pm. Tillicum Park, 18144 Couch Market Rd.

Author Reading: Brian Doyle

saturday 10

This Portland author is an Oregon Book Award Finalist and author of The Grail: A Year Ambling & Shambling Through an Oregon Vineyard in Pursuit of the Best Pinot Noir Wine in the Whole Wild World which very well may have the longest subtitle of any book with a normal-sized cover. He reads from his work at this event. 4pm Saturday, Oct 10. Bend Public Library- Brooks Room, 601 NW Wall St.

Sweatshop Union

saturday 10

This gang of Canadian rappers warmed up a largely freezing crowd at last year's Winterfest with their brag-and-boast-meets-socially conscious rap music. At least this show won't require a parka and a beanie. Maintain and Logy B open the show. $12/adv, $15/door. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Pac Man Party

saturday 10

It's been a startling 30 years since Pac Man was first released (yes, we're all getting old) and local band Kousefly is hosting a rare Pac Man competition to celebrate this anniversary. You can enter the game for a buck - high score wins, no extra points for stonewashed denim. KouseFly. 8pm-12am. M&J Tavern, 102 Greenwood Ave.

Warm Gadget

saturday 10

This electronic/industrial/rock and effing roll band is fronted by some familiar faces from the local music scene, including Tim Vester, who it should be noted is in the process of changing his name to Boy George W. Bush. That's funny. Oh yeah and it's a free show. 10pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

The Janks, AM Interstate

sunday 11

The Silver Moon, once again, becomes ground zero for indie rock in Bend when the beer and dance purveyor opens its doors to the Janks, an LA-based folky rock band with a Wilco-ish sound. Check out the Janks' cut "Dead Man" on their MySpace page - you'll like it. The equally rocking (and sometimes folky) AM Interstate opens the show. $7. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Blackstrap

wednesday 14

Just when you think Blackstrap has quieted down, Bend's bluegrass powerhouse takes the Wednesday night stage at McMenamins for a surefire hootenanny. All ages, Free. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School 700 NW Bond St.

Third Thursday Word

thursday 15

Last year's Source fiction issue featured a piece by c.vance, the clever local lower-cased writer who is also the owner and operator of Throwback Books, a small press located right here in Bend. This event features fellow Throwback authors Jonathan Ludwig and Jonathan Treadway. 7pm Thursday, Oct 15. Camalli Books, 1288 SW Simpson Ave.
