Our Picks for 12/16 - 12/24: The Shoemaker Brothers, Bill Keale, A Christmas Carol and more

What to do in Central Oregon during the week of 12/16 - 12/24/2009.

RiffTrax Live: Christmas
Shorts-Stravaganza

wednesday 16

Remember that show Mystery Science Theater 3000 where that dude and the two robots would sit through old movies for the mere purpose of mocking them? Yes, it was awesome. Well now the stars of that show are joined by parody master Weird Al Yankovic as they rip apart old-timey Christmas movies. This is the first of an intensely holiday-oriented Picks page, just so you know. 8pm Wednesday, Dec 16. Old Mill Stadium 16, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Bill Keale, A Holiday Concert

friday 18

Quick, shout out the first word that comes to mind when we say, "Christmas." Did you say, "Hawaiian music?" So did we! At this show, local island music master Bill Keale is joined by his brother Mike, along with Kim Breedlove, and Crystal Lum of the Hokulea Dancers to get you into the holiday mood - island style. 7pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave.

A Christmas Carol

friday-tuesday 18-22

This full cast of local adults and kids puts on the classic Dickens story on the Tower's big stage once again thanks to the combined efforts of the Bend Experimental Art Theater and the Tower Theatre Foundation. Best line of the A Christmas Carol? "Today? Why today's Christmas Day." So awesomely Dickensian. $18 and $24/adults, $12/ages 12 & under. Dec 18-22. 7:30pm-9:30pm Friday, Dec 18. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

A Holiday Brewgrass Jamboree

friday 18

OK, so we've got Dickens, old holiday movies, Hawaiian Christmas songs and now add to the list bluegrass with this big pickin' bash. Lineup includes Blue Heart, Greg B., Old Wave, Blackstrap, and Bond St. Bluegrass All-stars. $5. Canned food drive. 2 cans get you a free signed poster. 7:30pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Concave Perception Chamber

saturday 19

There's nothing holiday about this show, which features a band we haven't seen playing out in quite a while. CPC is a massively psychedelic project that keeps things melodic, but always on the edge. In short, these guys really know what they're doing. Free. 10pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Christmas Belles

ends sunday 20

And just like that, we're back in the spirit with the final productions of this Southern farce featuring a church Christmas program that spins hilariously out of control. Weds thru Sat nights at 7:30pm and Sun at 2pm. $20/adults, $15/senior (60 and over), $12/student. Greenwood Playhouse, 148 NW Greenwood Ave.

Cloaked
Characters and
Joanna Lee

saturday 19

This hip-hop group and singer songwriter have been known to cross paths from time to time and it's surprisingly a good match. Also at this show is a beer pong tournament, reminding us that drinking from shared red plastic cups is the best way to share the holiday spirit. 9pm-3am. Black Horse Saloon, 20565 Brinson Blvd.

Adapting to Scarcity Fundraiser

sunday 20

This project is a benefit for the Adapting to Scarcity Fundraiser, which is helping to promote water rights and media empowerment in Guadalajara, Mexico. Appearing at the show are Mosley Wotta, Julie Southwell, Emily Lewis, Jenni Peskin, Lilli Worona, Avatierre, Vasudeva and special guests $5. 7pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Eric Tollefson
and Reed Thomas Lawrence

sunday 20

Two of Bend's most poppy and soulful singer-songwriters team up for a two-sided bill of blues-tinged tunes. It seemed like only a matter of time before we saw these two on the same stage. It's a Festivus miracle! 7pm. $10. Kilns College, 550 SW Industrial Way.

The Shoemaker Brothers

tuesday 22

There's been some talk around town about this Seattle-based act after they played a gig in the Mt. Bachelor lodge bar. The four brothers - real brothers, not like the Blues Brothers or Blood Brothers - play acoustic music that doesn't sound that acoustic at all. Think of them as a Ray LaMontagne sound-alike band, but with vocal duties split amongst four voices. Their music is, well, kinda sexy - at least in comparison that comes out of most acoustic quartets. $6. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.
