Our Picks for 6/16-6/23

Brett Dennen, Dawes

thursday 16

The Clear Summer Nights concert series kicks off in a major way on Thursday night with a sure-to-rock performance by the friendliest man in the business, Brett Dennen. The smooth-singing redhead is touring in support of his latest album, Loverboy, and is joined by Los Angeles throwback rock act, Dawes, who show off their bluesy indie-rock sound with their new album, Nothing is Wrong. Judging by how many people (about a billion, give or take) entered our contest for tickets to this show, Dennen is likely to pack the ACB courtyard. $20 advance tickets at Newport Market. 6:30pm. Athletic Club of Bend, 61615 Athletic Club Drive.

Zepparella with Tony G

friday 17

You a Led Zeppelin fan? If you have ears and are between the ages of 12 and 70, there’s a good chance you love the ordained gods of rock. But have you ever seen Zeppelin’s music performed by an exclusively female lineup? Didn’t think so. And that’s why you should hit up the Domino Room on Friday night for an estrogen-spiked take on Zep’s most sacred songs. $15 in advance, $18 at door. Tickets at bendticket.com. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Jeff Lorber, Patrick Lamb

friday 17

The Jazz at the Oxford series continues on Friday night with two shows by the godfather of jazz fusion, Jeff Lorber, who will be tickling the keys into submission. Also appearing is Patrick Lamb, in celebration of his own CD release. Take a look at our Sound section to see what Woody has to say about this show. 6:30pm and 9:30pm. Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Ave. $40 at Bendticket.com.

Jokers & Fools 2

friday 17

The stage at the 2nd Street Theater isn’t just for plays and musicals, as evidenced by this show by the Bend Improv group, who will get your funny bone stinging. Also appearing at the show are local comics Jake Woodmansee and Stan Whitton, who won’t be able to help you with that frown you’ve been working on. $8 tickets at: 2ndstreettheater.com or at the door. 7pm Friday, Jun 17. 2nd Street Theater, 220 NE Lafayette Ave.

Sisters Wine & Brew Festival

friday-saturday 17-18

We Central Oregonians love fermented beverages, so what better way to enjoy a summer day than at a festival that celebrates wine and beer? All of the vendors hail from the great Pacific Northwest and many of the names will be familiar. It’s not all about the booze though, as there will plenty of fine music too, including Erin Cole-Baker and Leif James. Good food will also be in abundance to help clear your palate and mellow your buzz. 3pm-9pm Friday and 11am - 8pm Saturday. The Village Green, downtown Sisters. See sisterswineandbrew.com for more info.

Old-Skool Hip Hop Party

saturday 18

The best hip-hop is old-school (or old-skool, I you’re cool) hip-hop. Grandmaster Flash and A Tribe Called Quest made beats and rhymes you just can’t find in our world of auto-tune. A night of nostalgia and nasty dancing will be capped with prizes for folks who show up in the best get-up of the era (bring your Hammer-pants, afro pic, old Nikes and strike your B-Boy stance). Also on the bill are: Norothorn Lights, MC Mystic, and Elevated. Free show. 9pm. Madhappy Lounge, 850 NW Brooks St.

4th Anniversary Party of the Poet House

saturday 18

For four years the Poet House has provided a place for young artists to not only hang their work and but also their hat — a refuge for the misunderstood. The PoHo’s “Grand STILL Opening,” kicks off at 5pm with music from Justin Lavik, Grace Laxson, Brad Jones, and Jason Schweitzer and apps and drinks follow from 7pm-9pm. Drink deep from the ever-present jug of Carlo Rossi that those kids keep stashed away and get ready for the dance party at 9pm. Poethouse Art, 55 NW Minnesota Ave.

Tech N9ne

thursday 23

We at the Source have a tradition this time of year. We gather around a computer and collectively gasp at the deliberate insanity that is the Gathering of the Juggalos infomercial. If you don’t know what the Gathering is, it’s essentially a collection of super crazy black-and-white-face-painted fans of the Insane Clown Posse who call themselves Juggalos and spray each other with cheap soda and stuff like that. We were shocked when in minute 12 or so of the infomercial, they announced that Tech N9ne would be appearing because he’s playing here in Bend, meaning some on the Juggalo fringe won’t have to drive out to Michigan for the Gathering. Also on the bill with this Kansas City rapper are: Krizz Kaliko, Kutt Calhoun, Big Scoob, Jay Rock, Mayday, Steve Stone and Maintain. Tickets $26/$30 at the door. 7pm. Midtown Ballroom
