Our Picks for the week of 10/29-11/5

HDC Halloween Party and Drag Show

friday 31

In the first of the many, many Halloween events we're picking out for you (there's even more on our special Halloween section on page 16!), the Human Dignity Coalition is throwing their annual Halloween bash featuring PDX's Poisonwaters and friends, after party with Grove DJs, live auction, dancing and more. It's pretty much a guaranteed good time. And wear a costume for crying out loud - trust us, you'll fit in no matter what you wear. 21 and over. 7:30pm. $26. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Power 94 Monster Ball

friday 31

The notion of spending Halloween night in an old church has a frightening tinge to it, but perhaps not as much if you realize the church is the feel-good domain of the Old Stone Church, which is being transformed into a "haunted" dance club. There should be plenty of thumping music for your gyrating pleasure and you can get in on the $2,000 in prizes by wearing your scariest, naughtiest and/or funniest costumes. 8pm-2am. Old Stone Church. 157 NW Franklin Ave.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

friday 31

Last month we got word that the Tower was hosting a hard rock show and now we've learned they're playing Rocky Horror Picture Show. Man, things are suddenly getting urban at the Tower and we like it. Dress up like your favorite character and, well ...if you've been to a screening of this cult classic before, you should know what to do. Costume contest! And promoters want you to know that this is a dry show, even if it is 21 and over. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. $10/adult, $7/students (with ID).

Halloween Party with Person People

friday 31

In what might be our dream event, the Silver Moon and the Tower Theatre are getting all Captain Planet on our asses and combining powers for this killer Halloween show featuring two of Bend's most danceable acts: Person People and Empty Space Orchestra. Flip the page and read about Person People's local dominance to get you ready for this party. 21 and over. 8pm doors. $10. Tulen Center/Silver Moon Brewing Co.

Hoedown for Hunger

saturday 1

Rather than sitting around selfishly gorging yourself on Halloween candy on Saturday, you should peel yourself from your sugar fix and do something good with yourself, like feed the hungry. There's live music, a chili cook off, silent auction and more at this community gathering. You can also donate some survival gear to help the homeless weather the impending winter while you're at it. Tickets available at the door or at 312-2096. 11am-8pm Bend Community Center, 1036 NE 5th St. $10/adult, $5/children 6-12, 5 and under free.

Halloweekend Part III

saturday 1

Ya thought we were done with the Halloween shenanigans and tomfoolery? Not a chance. The downtown Martini Bar is holding festivities Thursday-Saturday and the final edition features killer local beat master DJ Swett on the wheels to help you exorcise those remaining demons from your system during this "Good vs. Evil" themed get-down. 10pm. Bendistillery Martini Bar, 850 NW Brooks St.

Necktie Killer

sunday 2

Think ska is dead? Well not a chance, it's risen from the grave in Central Oregon like a zombie from the "Thriller" video to get your body moving. Finish out this ghoulish weekend with some ska, punk, funk and more from Redmond's Necktie Killer. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

wednesday 5

If you haven't seen this relatively new indie folk and rock act, then you should, because the band, fronted by former Threes member Anastacia Scott, is quickly becoming one of the strongest acts in the region. Check out her supporting all-star cast: drummer Jared Forqueran, and husband/wife team Aaron-Andre Miller and Stephanie Miller. All ages. 7pm. Free. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

The Nature of Words

wednesday-sunday 5-9

If you flip all the way to what we call the "back of the book" you'll find a preview of Bend's premier literary event, The Nature of Words, written, quite fittingly by local author Suzanne Burns.
