Our Picks for the week of 10/8/08

BendFilm Festival

thursday-sunday 9-12

Movies, movies, movies. Documentary movies, feature-length movies, short movies, tall movies, round movies, square movies...it's BendFilm! Bend's display of cinematic prowess goes off all weekend all over town. Check out the Culture section for some lowdown on the festival, but for ticket info, schedule and all sorts of other information, please visit bendfilm.org. Thursday-Sunday, Oct 9-12.

Jeshu's Death Trap

friday 10

We know and we like Redmond's punk rock outfit Larry and His Flask - a band that's had a big year with some successful and extensive touring as well as a new disc. But now they're trying something different by playing all acoustic (with some extra members) and calling themselves Jeshu's Death Trap. New name, new sound but should be same old awesomeness. 7pm. Santiago's Mate' Company, 528 SW 6th St., Redmond.

Blue James Band

friday 10

When you think of music out of Los Angeles, a roots rock outfit isn't exactly what comes to mind - I mean, these guys don't even wear eyeliner. But seriously now, Blue James Band, led by Clifton Williams, sounds like it should fit right in here in roots-loving Bend. There's some funk, some reggae, and some good ol' fashioned rock and roll. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 Greenwood Ave.

Erin Cole-Baker

friday 10

Most know her as one half of the Erins, but out on her own she's two parts awesome with some sweet acoustic sounds (and occasional banjo plucking). Check her out live and you're likely to hear some cuts from her soon-to-be-released CD. 7pm-9pm. $5. Winestyles, 1740 NW Pence Ln # 2.

Smokin' Ashes vs. Dockyard Derby Dames

saturday 11

You know what we like about Tacoma? Uh, let's see...nothin'! That's what we're rooting for Lava City Roller Doll's own team, the Smokin' Ashes, to beat the putrid smelling paper factory air right out of Tacoma's Dockyard Derby Dames. And if you don't get that joke...we'll let you in on the fun...Tacoma smells like total crap, all the time, constantly. Visit lavacityrollerdolls.com for info. 6pm, Central Oregon Indoor Sports Center, 20795 High Desert Ln. $10/general admission, $5/seniors and children under 13, Free/kids under 5.

Tony Furtado Band

saturday 11

What up Tony? You don't come to Bend for almost two years and now you just can't get enough of the dry side of the mountains? Well, that's just fine. We're pleased as punch to have Mr. Furtado and his super-fast picking Americana instrumentals back in town. Last time he was here, Furtado played to about a thousand folks at Bite of Bend, but this time it's a more intimate affair up in the Annex...but he's bringing his hard-driving band with him, so lace up those dancing shoes. Doors open at 9pm, 21 and over. 10pm. $13/advance, $15/door. The Annex, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Tech N9ne

sunday 12

We've said it once and we'll probably say it a few more times, but Bend loves its hardcore rap. And that's why an appearance by Tech N9ne should draw rap fans from all over the county (and beyond) to his crazy-as-usual show. Here's some additional Tech N9ne information: the Kansas City rapper just sold his millionth record, thanks to the release of his latest double-album, Killer featuring collaborations with Ice Cube, Paul Wall and Kottonmouth Kings. Oh, and the cover of that album is a satire of the Thriller cover, with Tech stretched out all sexy like...and wearing a straight jacket. All ages. Doors open at 7pm. 8pm. $23/advance, $25/door. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Whiting Tennis

wednesday 15

This solo-act-turned rock band from Seattle has been to the Moon before, and it's good to see Mr. Tennis and band back here again to dish out some creamy indie/folk numbers. Whiting Tennis is embarking on a nation-wide tour and thankfully has included Bend along its Americana-revival trek across the nation. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

David Jacobs-Strain

thursday 16

The party people of the Grove Presents have carefully chosen Eugene blues wunderkind David Jacobs-Strain for a show at the Moon, which should be a perfect fit for the crowd that is known to gather at that location. DJS has played around town as much as anyone from the other side of the mountains, and seems more awesome with each appearance. You've probably heard about him...now go finally hear him. 9pm. $7. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.
