Our Picks for the Week of 11/19-11/27

The Sofa Kings

friday 21

You've likely seen MC Mystic behind the turntables as well as the microphone, but most don't know the dude can also play the drums like nobody's business. He'll show off his beatkeeping prowess with this new band, the Sofa Kings, the female-fronted outfit that's debuting at the newly reopened Pyro Lounge at the Old Mill Martini Bar. That's a pretty clever name for a venue that was closed due to a fire not too long ago. 9pm. Pyro Lounge at The Old Mill Martini Bar, 360 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Will Durst

friday 21

If you didn't laugh enough during the past election, check out Durst's bipartisan take on political hilarity. Check out the Culture section for more info. 21 and over. 8pm. $25/advance, $28/door. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St., 317-0700.

Peace Bridges Benefit Event

sunday 23

This local nonprofit is bringing in the talents of classical pianist and singer/songwriter Jonathan Hanks for a special concert to raise funds for the Better Life Children's Home of Kibwezi, Kenya. To raise money and awareness of this orphanage, there will also be a silent art auction, and an appearance by local hand drummer Dale Largent. Call 383-2646 for info. 3pm. First Presbyterian Church, 230 NE 9th St. $15/person, $10/teens, children free.

Mac Lethal

monday 24

Hip-hop ain't just coming out of Long Beach, Compton and Brooklyn these days. It's coming from even the most unlikely of places and in large quantities from the Midwest, and Kansas City's Mac Lethal is living proof of that. He's also bringing Sadistik, Grieves and South Dakota's Soulcrate Music along for extra rap power. See the Liner Notes column for more on Midwest hip-hop. All ages. See this week's Sound article. 9pm. $10/advance, $12/door. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Brent Amaker & The Rodeo w/Problem Stick

tuesday 25

These guys wear matching cowboy hats and country-fied get ups while playing real live country music with plenty of twang that sits nicely with the deep voice and humorous lyrics of front man Brent Amaker. This band - out of Seattle of all places - has been out on the road, criss-crossing the country on a national tour, but are stopping off at the Annex to get yer boots a kickin' just a week after the release of their album, Howdy Do. Opening up the show is the increasingly awesome and increasingly "wrecked" rockers of Problem Stick. Belt buckles will not be provided, please bring your own. 9pm. $10. The Annex, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science, DJ Barisone

wednesday 26

San Francisco's hard-working DJ/producer J. Boogie is back in action with the release of 2008's Soul Vibrations, his first new release in five years. J. Boogie brings together his mash-up of hip-hop, dub, reggae, soul and world music creating an experience that's anything but boring. J. Boogie works with everyone from Tony Moses to Deuce Eclipse to the Crown City Rockers and Jennifer Johns on the album, dishing out music for most moods. His show at the Domino Room features a full band, ensuring some seriously funky, high-energy (and high volume) tunes guaranteed to get anyone with a pulse moving. If you're looking for a way to spice up your Wednesday night this week, this is by far your best option in Bend and with tickets fixed at $12, it's definitely worth the price. 21 and over only, doors open at 8pm. 9pm. $12. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.
