Our Picks for the Week of 3/25 - 4/2

Freestyle Fiasco 9

friday 27

Benevolent local musical guru MC Mystic is joined by DJ Wicked to host the ninth installment of this all-out lyrical battle. There should be an explosion of rhymes blasting from the mouths of our talented local rhymesters, all of it coming right off the top of their domes. All ages, beer garden for 21+. $5. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

friday 27

This band very well might be Bend's best-kept secret. Although they fly largely under the radar, C.P.C. (Concave Perception Chamber) provides one of the craziest sonic presentations to be found here in town. Often psychedelic but always wound around a skillful core, CPC blasts out everything from prog rock to mathematically precise instrumentals. Players Bar & Grill 25 SW Century Dr.

through april 5

We trust our copy editor here at the Source and when she says that something is funny, we tend to agree. And she says Sylvia is one of the gosh-darned funniest things she's seen in a long while. It's about a dog that's played by a hilarious woman; of course that's going to be funny. Running for another week and a half, the play won't be here forever, so give it a look. Mar 20-April 5. 7:30pm Thurs - Sat, 2 pm Sunday, 2pm Sat 3/28 and 4/4. 7:30pm Thursday, Mar 26. Cascades Theatrical Company, 148 NW Greenwood Ave. $20/Adult, $15/Senior (60 and over), $10/Student.

The JZ Band

friday 27

This is how David Z describes his quartet that also includes local music stalwart Joe Leonardi: "Sexagenarians playing original music for dancing in a countryrockinblues format." Slightly self-deprecating, but quite funny and quite accurate. The Sisters-based outfit brings its show into Bend with a style that's hardly restricted only to fellow sexagenarians. 8pm-11pm. $5. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

DJ Barisone & Mez

What do members of the Person People crew do when they're not peopling persons or personing people? Well, judging from what we've learned about Saturday's show, it seems they like to throw inordinately fun dance parties. Barisone told us that he'll "be DJing the whole night and Mez is going to be joining me to kick rhymes over some bass-heavy future electro hip- hp type beats." 10pm. $3. Old Mill Martini Bar. 680 Powerhouse Dr.

Andre Nickatina, Dredg Darkness, Mac Matt and Top Shelf

saturday 28

If you think Bend is going to let a little recession stop us from enjoying big 'ol rap shows, you've got something to learn, hotshot. Nickatina, the sharp-tongued Oakland hip-hop legend, is returning to town once again. Read more in the On Stage column. 8:30pm. $23/adv, $27/door. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Rockstar Karaoke

saturday 28

Do you wanna rock? But you don't have a rock band? Thought so. Rock bands are hard to come by these days, especially ones that wear the appropriate amount of eyeliner. The Renegade Rollergirls are hosting this night of karaoke, which shouldn't be your typical karaoke amateur night. Also, you probably want to leave the Gloria Gaynor covers at home. Timbers South, 61331 S. Hwy 97.

Leon Redbone

tuesday 31

Part performance artist but mostly a world-class musician, Redbone is stopping off in Bend with his Panama hat, black sunglasses and bowtie to play from his vast catalogue. Call it vaudeville, call it oldtimey, call it whatever you want; just don't call it late for dinner. 7pm. $20, $25. Tower Theatre.

Audrye Sessions, At The Harvest, Mirf The Bing

Indie rock! Here in Bend! Audrye Sessions is a slightly Brit-tinged Oakland foursome with plenty of soul and vocals that are sweet but thankfully not overly sugary coupled with a range that can take them from acoustic heart-ticklers to emotional rockers all in one set. This band has been a "you gotta-hear-these-guys" act for more than a year and are playing this all-ages show at the little ol' PoetHouse before taking up an opening slot for Manchester Orchestra's cross-country tour. All ages. 7pm. $5. PoetHouse Art, 856 Bond St. (Enter on Minnesota at the Wine Shop).

wednesday 1

In support of their newly released album Seed Gathering For a Winter Garden, Taarka returns to Oregon to show off their tough-to-explain-but-easy-to-dance-to blend of gypsy jazz, bluegrass and worldly sounds. 9pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.
