Our Picks for the Week of 5/27 - 6/4

David Jacobs-Strain

thursday 28

We'll tell you one more time to see one of the blues world's brightest young stars while you have the chance. Sure, he comes around a couple times a year, but that's not an excuse to miss him, ever. 8pm. $7. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

You'd probably know a lot more about Ian Tyson than you currently do if you were Canadian. This rodeo rider turned songwriter is the author of the hit song "Four Strong Winds" which was later recorded by both Neil Young and Johnny Cash. Now 75 years old, Tyson is still busy touring and laying down records. This time around he's on the road with fellow Canadian country star Corb Lund. 7pm. $45 or $40. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Check out the Sound section for a review of Kelley's new disc, Bending Blue, then hit up the Moon to see the progressive folkie in action. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Bend Bicycle Film Festival

friday 29

Read the preview of this fundraiser for Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) and The Bend Cycling Club in the Screen section. There will be all sorts of bike stuff up there on screen to feast your lookin' balls on. 7pm Friday, May 29. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. $10.

COTA Spring Fling

saturday 30

Do you like your trails? And do you like your trails in nice shape? Thought so. It would probably behoove you to get yourself out of bed (post Bend Bicycle Film Festival, of course) and down to the old Mt. Bachelor Park-and-Ride to gear up for the annual COTA Spring Fling work party...followed by a real party at Sunnyside Sports. 9am-2pm.

Rise Up Benefit: Empty Space Orchestra, Water & Bodies, We Are Brontosaurus

saturday 30

Flip the page and read more about Portland's Water & Bodies, who are on the bill for this benevolently rocking night to help out Rise Up International. 8pm. $6. PoetHouse Art. 55 NW Minnesota Ave.

The Ramblers at the Silver Moon? Um, hell yes! It's always a party and a half when our acoustic powerhouse takes the stage at this venue and Saturday night should be a hootenanny multiplied by a shindig. And it helps that they are playing with fellow pickers Old Wave this time around. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewery, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Mobile Five Jazz Quintet

saturday 30

It's great to see jazz popping up in town, as evidenced by this show, after the genre went underground upon the closing of Be Bop two years ago. This fivesome, which includes jazz students both local and from the University of Oregon as well as accomplished players, serves up both original material and arrangements of standard jazz repertoire. 8pm. $10, $7/students. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Relay for Life Fundraiser

sunday 31

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is around the corner (June 13 and 14) but this year organizers are getting a head start with this fundraising event. Essentially a garden party complete with food and drinks, the event also features the soulful acoustic sounds of the Quons - the local musically (and actually) married couple. 4pm-7pm. Jackson's Corner, 845 NW Delaware Ave. 647-2198. Free.

Stephanie Schneiderman

wednesday 3

Known for her work with Portland acoustic trio, Dirty Martini, Schneiderman is also a gem to see solo. When she's out on her own, her style amps up a bit with punchy lyrics, a tasty backbeat coupled with ambient sounds. 7pm. Free. McMenamins Old St. Francis School. 700 NW Bond St.

Ignite Bend 2

thursday 4

It's Power Point to the next level when Ignite Bend 2 takes the stage at the Tower. Not following? Turn to the Culture page and read more. 7pm Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. Free with ticket from www.ignitebend.com.
