Our Picks for the Week of 6/10-6/18

Barry Lopez

thursday 11

Oregon author Barry Lopez has been called the "nation's premiere nature writer" and we tend to agree with that assertion. His non-fiction book Arctic Dreams earned him a national book award in 1986 and in 2004 his novel Resistance was the winner of the Oregon book award. So, yeah, he's definitely not light in the resume department. At this event, Lopez will read and also be on hand to sign your books. 7pm Thursday, Jun 11. Bend Public Library, 601 NW Wall St.

Holden Young Trio

thursday 11

Both funky and rootsy, Holden Young and his Boulder-based trio descend on the Moon for what is almost guaranteed to be a perfectly danceable night. The band jumps genres but seems rooted in Colorado groove-based roots rock. 9pm. $3. Silver Moon Brewery, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

American Cancer Society's Relay for Life

Have you ever ran or walked for 24 hours straight? Even a lot of the most hardcore athletes here in town haven't even done that, but you can by participating in the Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. 1st Annual Chili Throwdown

saturday 13

Some people like chili, but others love it to the degree that they believe it should be celebrated and, if possible, given a yearly holiday. Well, this is as close as we're going to get as chefs from Scanlon's, 900 Wall, Ariana, Allyson's Kitchen, Victorian Cafe, and many more cook up their finest while you eat and listen to live music. Kids under 9 free. 2pm-5pm Saturday, Jun 13. Athletic Club of Bend's Courtyard, 61615 Athletic Club Drive.

Photo by Ben Moon.As evidenced by the beginning of Summer Sundays. summer is here. Kicking it off is local singer-songwriter turned national-touring star Reed Thomas Lawrence and his always-sunshiney band. A couple weeks ago we got the lineup for the Rothbury Festival and noticed that next to names like the Dead and Bob Dylan, there was Reed Thomas Lawrence. Impressed? We also got to hear some new demos from RTL and liked what we heard - it's less reggae and more blues and pop, but change is good. 2:30pm Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. Free.

Jason Spooner Trio

Equipped with a smooth voice and an even smoother approach to songwriting, Spooner and company blend roots, folk and blues, as they did when they played a showcase on Sirius XM's "The Loft." 7pm. $5. Angeline's Bakery, 121 W. Main St.

Perfect Zero

Still new on the Oregon musical landscape, Portland's Perfect Zero is making some waves in both the improvisational and electronic camps. With a style in line with STS9, there is more than enough to dance to with this act. 9pm. $5. Silver Moon Brewery, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.
