Lauryn Hill

If there's any artist you should splurge some dough to see it's definitely Lauryn Hill. After winning five Grammy's for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Hill disappeared from the public eye, and hasn't released an album since. Instead, she's been raising her five children with Rohan Marley (the fourth son of Bob). Now, 12 years after her amazing, soulful hip-hop album debuted, she's finally ready to share more of her beautiful voice and insightful lyrics with the world. Finally! 8pm Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

Bright Eyes

If you can't wait until Memorial Day weekend for the fine-tuned indie rock of Bright Eyes, who opens for Death Cab for Cutie on May 27 at the Les Schwab Amphitheater, you're in luck - if you have a ticket that is, because this show is sold out. Lead singer Conor Oberst and company play a variety of instruments in order to create melodic indie rock inspired with folk, rock and electronic music. 9pm Crystal Ballroom.

Rise Against!

Punk rock and politics go hand and hand, as has been evident since the beginnings of the genre. Rise Against follows suits with politically charged lyrics, and are activists themselves. Behind the lyrics comes hard rocking punk rock perfect for head banging. The band's latest album, End Game, find the band taking a stance against homophobia and living up to their name by truly rising against. 7:30pm Rose Garden Arena.

Ken Kesey Celebration

How is it possible to be from Oregon and have not read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and/or Sometimes a Great Notion? It just doesn't make sense to us. Gather with others who love the writings of Ken Kesey at the University of Oregon's daylong celebration of his life, work and status as Oregon's iconic author and counterculture personality. The festivities include talks, an art exhibit and the West Coast premier of the new Kesey documentary, Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place. 11am-11pm UO's Knight Library, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and McDonald Theatre.

  • DO NOT SPIT ON MY CAR

We recently visited Bend for the Film Festival and very much enjoyed ourselves, with one small exception. We parked our Ford in the public parking structure, only to find when we returned on Friday night that it had been spat upon, apparently in retribution for our Obama 2012 bumper sticker. I understand that whoever did this was passionate about politics, something I have always shared.

  • THE SOURCE ROCKS, BUT 'ONE DAY AT A TIME' DOESN'T

After living in Bend for a year and a half, I recently stopped through on business. I love the town, the people, and all the outdoor beauty the area offers. One of my favorite things about Bend is without question, The Source. From the first time I read it, I knew it would be a cover-to-cover great time for me to enjoy all the stories, community news, the updates on all the music and arts, presentations, and great things goings on around town.
