Sample Platter: Asian Sensations, your best bet on East meets West here in Bend 


The newest establishment in what is becoming Portland-based Bo and Steve Kline's Asian restaurant empire. Chef Kline, a native of Thailand, puts an artistic flair on each dish. Bend's most popular Chinese restaurant packs the families in every night clamoring for the slightly Americanized Szechwan, Hunan and Cantonese dishes. Even if the food can be predictable at times, big portions matched with big flavors make this is a Central Oregon institution. Chinese. 1005 Se 3rd St. 389-1725.

Sushi and Japanese-influenced dishes make up the extensive menu with some captivating variations on classic dishes. Standouts include the Sweet Miso Black Cod, the calamari dish and the lacquered short ribs. It's hard to find a dish that is not fabulous at this metropolitan spot with its city-slick atmosphere. This little Westside spot packs a big punch with its eclectic sushi and French/Asian inspired entrees. Always packed, this popular restaurant is home to the Orgasm roll as well as the Yakuza roll. Both are worth whatever wait there may be to get a table. 990 NW Newport Ave. 388-4636.


With pages of dishes to choose from-Szechwan, Mongolian, Hunan, Cantonese-this place doesn't mess around when it comes to Asian cuisine. Food this tasty should be terrible for you, but most dishes are low in fat and sodium. 61247 S Hwy 97. 389-9888.


Sumi Douglas serves her filling and expertly made lunch items like bento, stir-fry and yakisoba, and some traditional Japanese dinner items like sushi, donburi and kushi-yaki. All of the food is wonderful, but don't miss some of the more unusual appetizer items like moyashi, salad, tako su and Ohitashi as well as the world's best miso ramen. 1444 NW College Way, Ste. 1. 385-9191.


A blend of Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai noodle bowls, as well as some dim sum items, make up the menu here. House-made pot stickers and traditional Szechwan dishes, udon, ramen, curries and rice bowls are highlights, as is the Kung Pao Beef. 1600 NE 3rd St., 383-9033.

These physical forms of yoga are the beautiful compliments to the mental, mindful and meditative forms of yoga that balance the larger yoga (yogic) equation. Yoga is basically a non-denominational practice aimed at balancing the physical (body) existence with the meta-physical (mind) reality. The ensuing mind-body balance creates the union required for an increased "understanding" (consciousness) of the "living experience."

  • Walden's Corporate Servitude

    In the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience, I am proud to be one of eight Central Oregon citizens arrested on December 5 in Congressman Greg Walden's Bend office. At our January 26 trial we plan to present a compelling defense. This act of dissent follows years of futile attempts to encourage the Congressman to hold open, unscripted town meetings accessible to a majority of his constituents. The Congressman has grown so suspicious of impromptu encounters with ordinary citizens that on Saturday he required a Bend Police Department intervention that enabled him to enter the Water Project meeting at the Chamber of Commerce through the back door. (Greg, we are nonviolent people who believe that democracy thrives on open dialogue and transparency; there is no reason to avoid us.)

  • Doors of Equality Swing Both Ways

    I had to respond to "What's Wrong with Siri," (News, 1-4) since Apple's Siri isn't the problem. Three hours before I read, "What's wrong with Siri," I went to a store in town and complimented the cashier that this was the nicest "dollar" store I had ever been in.
