Share the Sno-Park Parking

A quick note on sno-park parking.

Just a note on Allie Middleton's article on where to go for cross-country skiing. There is usually lots of parking available at the sled hill lot at Wanoga and snowmobilers cannot park there. Same with Dutchman. Cross-country folks can park at the Nordic center and take five minutes to ski over. Snowmobilers cannot park at the Nordic center and have a very limited parking area at the high altitude lot at Dutchman.

Thanks,

  • Pringle Falls Timber Sale is a Ruse

In response to recent banner hangings in Bend protesting old growth forest liquidation by the EXF timber sale on Lookout Mountain in the Pringle Falls Experimental Forest of the Deschutes National Forest, the Forest Service made many false claims. The EXF experimental study design is a pretext for allowing large-scale, old growth forest logging when there are few large blocks of old growth forest left on the National Forest outside roadless and Wilderness areas. Scientists have known for decades that thinning trees increases the radial growth of remaining trees. There is no need to demonstrate this in one of the last blocks of relatively undisturbed old growth Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forest on the Deschutes.

  • Bend Can Do Better By Its Animals

Dog Fancy Magazine just voted Bend The Nation’s Dog Friendliest City 2012. It’s a title that we should be proud of, but is it accurate? We certainly love our dogs (and cats) we have great off-leash areas, trails and canine friendly businesses. We use their images to advertise our products and sell our newspapers. Yet, our great city still kills dogs (and cats) at our animal shelters every single week. You probably did not know that. We do not need to. It is wrong to do so. Over 200 cities and towns across the US have shelters that have stopped killing and now save over 90% of their cats and dogs. Many of these places have far fewer resources than we do.
