Sam Cooper & Co.

Sat., May 31

9 pm Volcanic Theatre Pub,

70 SW Century Dr. $5.

Portland songwriter Sam Cooper (formerly a multi-instrumentalist of indie rock act Horse Feathers) wrote and recorded his first solo album, Long Lost Love, with a quilt work of re-crafting songs he had tossed out years before. After building a band around the Americana anthems, Cooper is taking the revival on a tour built on blue-collar chords, hardworking harmonies and a return to the roots of simplistic folk music. Second Son opens.

Tango Alpha Tango

Wed., June 4

9 pm Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

"Boom Boom," the first track on Tango Alpha Tango's 2013 album Black Cloud sums up the power of the modern Portland blues trio. With dirty guitar riffs and a solo that burns throughout the song's bridge, the crawl of distorted vocals punctuated by rolling drums and sustained keys that fill out the meat of the song with screaming highs and grounding lows, it is only one of TAT's vengeful rock tracks that rev the engine of classic rock and roll.

Vandella

Wed., June 4

7 pm McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.

Vandella describes its music as "1970s rock via 1990." The band has the '70s locked in with hints of Laurel Canyon and dashes of the Eagles. The band can easily jump decades with hand-clapping dance ballads led by Berklee- trained vocalist Tracey Holland's sweet and expansive range.
