Welcome Back to the Pac

THOMAS WOLFE REVISTED

Gazing into the Source's crystal ball (you'll generally find the orb amidst the flying fish at the Colorado roundabout) and Left Field sees, after the 2008 NFL season, the following chain of events: Mike Holmgren finishes the last year of his contract and retires from Seattle; Tyrone Willingham is relieved of his duties as head football coach at the University of Washington for failing to deliver on the mandate to win; Jim Mora declines to be considered for head coach of the Seahawks and accepts his dream job to run the University of Washington program; the 49ers are finally done with Mike Nolan's act and fire him; San Francisco offers Holmgren a chance to finish his career in his hometown as head coach of the five-time Super Bowl champions.

NEU KID ON THE BLOCK

Didn't take Rick Neuheisel long to toss a few logs on the smoldering USC-UCLA rivalry. But, then, the new Bruin coach is not one to back down from a challenge. Just ask Derek Sandlin.

The Bend resident has season tickets for Oregon State University football, well within earshot of players and opposing coaches.

During one of Neuheisel's visits to Corvallis as head coach of the University of Washington, Sandlin took exception to Neuheisel's motivational techniques.

The former UCLA quarterback was questioning a player's commitment to the team and Sandlin moved to the front row to share his response with Neuheisel.

"Hey, Neuheisel, why don't YOU show some commitment! You'll leave as soon as someone offers you one dollar more!"

"He stood up, looked at me, swore a bit at me, then said, 'Shut the #@%$ up and sit down" related Sandlin. "Then, he stormed off."

The one thing that Slick Rick didn't offer up? A denial. - Mike Ficher
